Symantec Brightmail Gateway with AntiVirus enabled refreshes virus definitions periodically, even though new viruses may not be discovered. This allows administrators to check whether their protection is up to date by simply looking at the date of their virus definitions.
Virus definitions for Symantec Brightmail Gateway are kept always up to date through automatic LiveUpdate. Automatic LiveUpdate can be configured to check for updates on a schedule defined by the administrator. When a new definition update is available, LiveUpdate will detect it and automatically download it to the Symantec Brightmail Gateway scanner. Symantec Brightmail Gateway can also be configured to download previously obtained virus definitions from a LAN host, rather than from Symantec servers.
