The following is a high-level overview of new features in the latest NetBackup 6.5.4 release.

More comprehensive backup and recovery for virtual servers environments

Complete protection for VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V and other virtualized environments -- all from one easy to manage console
  • Faster recovery and more storage efficient backups of virtual machines, that includes granular recovery of individual files and folders, as well as client-side deduplication via PureDisk

  • Automate and manage snapshots for VMware virtual machines from host and array-based providers (e.g., NetApp Snapshot, EMC TimeFinder, Veritas Storage Foundation) using NetBackup

  • Automatically discover virtual machines including those not currently protected by NetBackup

Faster recovery of Microsoft and Windows based environments

For customers upgrading to new versions of Windows applications or Windows Server 2008, NetBackup eliminates the need for multiple application data protection tools and simplifies consolidation of servers to new platforms.
  • Expanded support for Microsoft Server 2008, means more database (Oracle, SAP, DB2, Lotus Notes), and advanced data protections capabilities are now available through NetBackup agents/options

  • Quick restore of individual Active Directory items with full attributes, including deleted users accounts, printers, servers and organizational units (OU’s), without rebooting Active Directory

  • Fast, granular recovery of any data from SharePoint Server environments (e.g., sites, sub-sites, lists, documents, calendars)

Streamlined backup and recovery for Enterprise Vault

  • Simplify backup and recovery of Symantec Enterprise Vault environments, including partitions and associated databases.
  • Comprehensive restore capability, from entire Vault Stores and Partitions down to an individual file or index

Improve your operational efficiency

  • Optimized Virtual Synthetics for OpenStorage -- faster restore of a full backup image from incrementals with negligible network or server impact

  • Open Storage Direct-to-Tape -- faster OpenStorage appliance backup directly to tape, bypassing the backup server, while NetBackup tape format allows simplified recovery of data from tape

  • Enhanced archive backup reporting – Symantec Backup Reporter now provides centralize backup and archive reporting for Enterprise Vault environments.

Platform and Application Proliferation

Symantec allows customers to run NetBackup master and media servers on a wide array of operating systems and can protect a wide array of servers (clients). With each release Symantec adds support for new chip and operating system combinations. Highlights of new support in the latest release include:
  • Windows 2008 x64 support for NetBackup master & media server; Windows 2008 x64 Snapshot client support
  • IBM AIX 6.1 support for NetBackup master & media server
  • Expanded Bare Metal Recovery (BMR) client & server support
