Server virtualization technologies such as VMware ESX have enabled server consolidation and improved hardware utilization leading to considerable cost savings. However, they have given rise to bigger challenges such as increased vulnerability to downtime and greater complexity of managing across physical and virtual infrastructure. Where a hardware failure may have previously impacted a single application, with virtualization, multiple applications would now be affected. It's like having too many eggs in one basket. There is a greater need for a single HA/DR solution to seamlessly and effectively manage across this infrastructure.
