This acquisition brings to Symantec the industry's first anti-spam router, which uses innovative traffic-shaping techniques to reduce the volume of malicious threats entering the network, including spam, viruses and other threats. This technology complements the anti-spam filtering solutions Symantec acquired from Brightmail. Symantec initially intends to offer the existing TurnTide product as a standalone solution on Symantec hardware. In addition, Symantec plans to integrate the technology with its existing line of security solutions at the gateway.

In October 2003, Symantec completed the acquisition of SafeWeb, Inc., a leading provider of SSL VPN appliances. The acquisition brought to Symantec SafeWeb's Secure Extranet Appliance technology designed to reduce the cost and complexity of deploying, managing, and maintaining secure access to remote users. Symantec intends to offer the SafeWeb SSL-based VPN technology on the Symantec appliance platforms as a standalone offering. In addition, Symantec plans to integrate the clientless VPN capabilities into the next version of the Symantec Gateway Security Appliance series later in 2004. By integrating SafeWeb's clientless VPN technology into the Symantec Gateway Security Appliance, Symantec can offer the most comprehensive protection without the need to deploy additional hardware at the gateway or software at the desktop.

The acquisition culminated from a long-standing partnership between the two companies for the joint development of the Symantec Firewall/VPN Appliance product family. This acquisition brought additional advantages to Symantec in the small security appliance market through the following: Ownership of the intellectual property (including patents), greater control of the development and support activities, and reduced manufacturing costs.

Recourse Technologies

In August 2002, Symantec completed the acquisition of Recourse Technologies. The acquisition brought to Symantec true gigabit speed network intrusion detection with next generation hybrid technology and the industry's leading "honeypot" solution. This combination provided to customers Symantec's industry-leading host-based intrusion detection solution, Intruder Alert, and the leading gigabit network intrusion detection system, ManHunt, for the most comprehensive, real-time preventive protection. In addition, the acquisition brought Recourse's ManTrap into Symantec's portfolio. ManTrap provides a unique approach for identifying and containing internal and external threats by providing an early warning system that can surface an attack on a false system before it hits a real system. Administrators can analyze the attacker's actions, motivations and methods in the "honeypot" or decoy system to prevent intrusions to real systems, or terminate the session immediately.

Symantec is focusing on integrating the SecurityFocus line of DeepSight Threat Management Systems and Alert Services into its existing Symantec Security Response organization, to provide customers with the most comprehensive, proactive early warning system across the broadest range of threats. Symantec will continue to license the SecurityFocus Vulnerability Database to security product vendors, managed service providers and other organizations that use it to create powerful new security products and services for their customers. In addition, Symantec will continue to manage the Bugtraq mailing list and the online security community under the SecurityFocus brand. It will continue to offer a forum for objective reporting by security experts on the latest IT threats and attacks as well as how to prevent security breaches.

The CyberWolf technology is becoming an integral component of Symantec's enterprise security solutions, which provide any size organization with the technology, global response and services necessary to manage its information security.

AXENT Technologies

In July 2000, Symantec signed a definitive merger agreement with AXENT Technologies, and AXENT became a wholly owned subsidiary of Symantec on December 18, 2000. As security industry leaders, Symantec and AXENT brought together a broad range of complementary and comprehensive security solutions and services, including the industry's leading virus protection, content filtering, host- and network-based intrusion detection, vulnerability assessment, and firewall capabilities. The merger also provided Symantec with important distribution, product, and market advantages, as well as one of the largest dedicated teams of security experts in the industry.

20/20 Software, Inc.

In April 2000, Symantec completed its acquisition of 20/20 Software, giving Symantec an effective way to distribute software and configuration packages to networked machines. Designed to capture and deploy a delta of changes on a given PC, the AutoInstall technology will be integrated into Symantec's Ghost Disk Cloning solution in order to enable customers a proven means to distribute customized software packages within a heterogeneous enterprise environment. Symantec Ghost is the market leading Disk Cloning solution for PC deployment and disaster recovery. By design, Ghost excels at full hard-drive imaging and cloning. The addition of 20/20 technology enabled Ghost to enter the lucrative PC Client/State Management market by providing effective software distribution and PC configuration utilities. Symantec and 20/20 operations have been combined.

L-3 Network Security

In March 2000, Symantec completed its acquisition of the vulnerability assessment and security consulting business of L-3 Network Security. Symantec employed the security experts of L-3 Network Security who have helped design and build the world's largest deployed intrusion detection system, the world's largest virtual private network and the world's first information risk management software. Additionally, other team members crafted and implemented national security and technology policies in the United States and the United Kingdom and founded the Defense Technology Security Administration and served as its first director. Symantec integrated L-3 Network Security's vulnerability assessment products, Retriever and Expert, into its best of breed security offering. Some of the world's largest organizations use these products, which provide a foundation to quickly and effectively design, implement and manage network security policies and further protect a company's content. Together these solutions determine, monitor, and enforce precise security levels and practices.

In July 1999, Symantec announced its acquisition of URLabs, a technology leader in the development of Internet access control and e-mail scanning solutions. Symantec's new Internet-connected business model coupled with the URLabs acquisition provided Symantec with significant opportunities to deliver content security solutions to businesses around the world. These security solutions help customers keep their data and networks secure when interacting with the Internet and at the same time help maintain peak employee productivity as they interact with the Internet. This acquisition of URLabs enhanced Symantec's position in the Internet Security space.

Quarterdeck Corporation

In October 1998, Symantec signed a definitive agreement to acquire Quarterdeck Corporation. Quarterdeck became a wholly owned subsidiary of Symantec on March 30th, 1999. Symantec's acquisition of Quarterdeck provided leading edge technologies to complement Symantec's suite of software utilities, remote productivity solutions, and Java development tools.

Binary Research Limited

In June 1998, Symantec Corporation announced that it had purchased the assets of Binary Research Limited, the Auckland, New Zealand-based company that developed Ghost. Ghost was the industry-leading disk cloning technology, which had enhanced Symantec's solutions for corporate customers by providing them with software tools that help to manage personal computer (PC) systems more effectively and cost efficiently. Ghost was the clear leader in the disk cloning market. The addition of Ghost to the Symantec product family strongly supported Symantec's vision of making its customers as productive as possible and keeping their computers safe and reliable.
