Symantec’s suite of solutions helps educational institute optimise student services for one-quarter of Singapore’s post-secondary education students
SINGAPORE – November 30, 2010 –
Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) has implemented four Symantec backup, management and security solutions made up of Symantec NetBackup 7, Veritas Storage Foundation and Veritas Cluster Server, Altiris Client Management Suite, and Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition – Endpoint Protection. This has effectively reduced the amount of time spent by ITE on securing, restoring data and deploying new software by at least 75 percent across their 11,000 endpoints.
ITE, a statutory board under the Ministry of Education, is a post-secondary institution that provides pre-employment training to secondary school leavers and continuing education and training to working adults. Since its establishment on 1 April 1992, ITE has developed itself into an institution well-known for its provision of a broad-based, multi-disciplinary curriculum that encompasses courses in Applied & Health Sciences, Business & Services, Design & Media, Electronics & Info-Comm Technology, Engineering and Hospitality.
In January 2005, ITE implemented a "One ITE System, Three Colleges” Governance and Education Model, which aimed at devolving higher autonomy to the campuses while ensuring alignment to common organisational goals, to significantly change the way ITE education is shaped.
The new Governance and Education Model also resulted in a renewed focus on enhancing ITE’s infrastructure to deliver optimised services for its students. However, it has also proven to be a challenge with exponential data growth, increasing user expectations and rapidly emerging security threats.
"Supporting the "One ITE System, Three Colleges” Model was a significant transition for our IT team. We had to put in place the central management of corporate IT functions while allocating IT resources to support college-specific solutions. Keeping up with user demand for real-time access to information was a constant challenge,” said Tan Kay Chuan, divisional director, Information Technology, ITE.
Delivering Integrated Backup and Recovery with High Availability across Multiple Sites
To address their data management and storage issues surrounding backup, recovery and availability at all their campuses, ITE implemented Symantec NetBackup 7 with a built-in deduplication engine, Veritas Storage Foundation and Veritas Server Cluster. Symantec’s NetBackup 7 was chosen for its well-integrated deduplication technology, robust support of VMware environments and the ITE IT team’s familiarity with the platform.
This move enabled ITE to increase disk efficiency and complete backups within the window, reduce time spent on restoring data and eliminated the need to deploy a dedicated WAN link for backups. ITE also adopted Veritas Storage Foundation and Veritas Cluster Server to provide failover for key systems in the event of hardware failure, for system maintenance and to ensure high availability.
Single Console Endpoint Management with Reduction of Software Deployment Time by at least 75 Percent
With 11,000 endpoints spread across various campuses, ITE also realised that it needed to automate endpoint management rather than depend on manual processes, which required staff to visit each computer when deploying software. After extensive evaluation, ITE selected the Altiris Client Management Suite for its desktop environment. With this implementation, software delivery, inventory, patch management and application is now managed from a single product and console, cutting the time for new software deployment by at least 75 percent.
Providing Effective Security
Experiencing inadequacies with its then security solution, like the lack of spyware protection and viruses and worms getting through due to the slow publication of new definitions, ITE looked to enhance security in its IT environment. After evaluating several products, ITE ultimately selected Symantec Endpoint Protection, a part of Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition, which is an integrated solution offering antivirus, spyware protection, firewall and intrusion protection with an easy-to-use and robust management console.
"Working with Symantec and its partners, including BT Frontline, ITE has been able to effectively leverage on its technology investments to continuously improve and inject innovation in our student services. Our goal is to develop strategic partnerships with our vendors, rather than simply providing transactions on a product point, as we believe this will help us better meet our ongoing needs. Symantec is especially suited to this approach. It has been proactive in understanding our needs, and willing to work on how best to implement solutions to address these needs,” Tan added.
"As organisations such as ITE evolve and grow, new management, insight and optimisation requirements are needed to ensure the security, management and availability of data and applications without added complexity and cost,” said Tan Yuh-Woei, country manager, Symantec Singapore. "Symantec is well-positioned to help organisations transform and manage their IT environments through increased visibility, management and automation, enabling them to work more efficiently.”
Based on its positive experience, ITE is planning two new projects with Symantec technology, including installing Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery Desktop Edition across all ITE’s endpoints, and Symantec Enterprise Vault that will enable the Institute to achieve efficiencies that a comprehensive archiving solution will bring. In addition, ITE is also enrolled in Symantec Campus Agreement, designed to reduce complexity in the software licensing, resulting in greater cost savings and ease of use of Symantec’s solutions in its IT environment.
