Symantec and SMU Partner to Nurture Next Generation Security Talents

Partnership supports fabric of Singapore's security infrastructure

SINGAPORE - November 28, 2012- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Singapore Management University (SMU). The MoU is designed to jointly train and equip IT security professionals with the latest knowledge and skill sets in information security, expanding Singapore's capabilities and talent in information protection.

Under the MoU, Symantec will engage SMU's School of Information Systems (SIS) students in Symantec's annual summer internship programs. This includes plans to mentor the students in mutually agreed research projects and partnerships with Symantec's recently launched Security Response Centre in Singapore.

The MoU also enables Symantec and SMU SIS to hold in-depth discussions on various matters, such as conducting joint research on security intelligence. Symantec will conduct security and threat intelligence briefings with SMU to share best practices and protection methodologies against emerging threats.

Subhendu Sahu, Symantec's business development director for Government & Public Sector, Asia South Region said, "Information security is becoming an increasingly complex undertaking, exacerbated by the fact that cyber threats are growing at an alarming rate annually. To stay ahead of the threat curve, we need to continually invest in the best talents and cultivate a ready pool of security professionals in Singapore."

"The recently established Symantec Response Centre in Singapore is a key facility for Symantec in the region and globally. It makes perfect sense for us to team with SMU to nurture and develop IT security talents, trained in the newest IT security systems and methodologies, and who are ready to contribute from the time they are students right to the point they enter the Singapore and global workforce. This MoU marks our first partnership with a local university and is testament to our commitment in supporting Singapore's development as a global security hub."

"This partnership with Symantec, a recognized global leader in information security, further enhances opportunities for our undergraduate and post-graduate students in information security education and research. Through this MoU, our students will have enhanced access to Symantec personnel, who are some of the brightest engineers and researchers in the security industry. This enables us to better prepare our students for current and emerging issues related to information security and data protection. It also gives us access to leading Symantec technologies and software products. We are confident that this will motivate more of our students to take a serious interest in learning how to improve information security and data protection in business and public sector settings," said Professor Steven Miller, SMU's Vice Provost (Research) and Dean, School of Information Systems.

The MoU will be renewed annually, based on mutual agreement. Symantec is also seeking to extend this MoU with other institutes of higher learning based in Singapore.
