NetBackup Standard Client

This basic client is required to protect a computer system such as Windows, UNIX or Linux over the LAN. This client provides minimal baseline functionality for all supported operating systems.
  • Basic File System Protection – Protect file and directory data including attributes and other file system metadata. Please see the latest NetBackup Operating System Compatibility List on the support site for details on what systems are currently supported.
  • Open File Backup – Protect files that are open by other applications at the time of the backup. Open files are recorded in the log.
  • Microsoft Active Directory – Protect Microsoft ADS while online, and restore ADS objects at a granular level from a single pass ADS backup.
  • Bare Metal Restore – This feature dramatically reduces the time required for a full system restore by bypassing the usual hardware setup and OS install. Quickly performs a diskless boot from the network, installs a temporary OS, and configures the disks in preparation for restore. Can also streamline the full restore of a physical system to a virtual system such as VMware or Hyper-V (P-V restore).
  • Client Encryption – Encrypt data at the client to provide data security while in transit over the network and on storage media. Client encryption is ideal for protecting smaller clients and databases, and supports a variety of encryption algorithms, including 128-bit and 256-bit as well as legacy 40-bit and 56-bit encryption methods. For more robust applications, take a look at the Media Server Encryption Option (see below).

NetBackup Enterprise Client

This premium client includes advanced functionality designed for virtualized hosts (VMware, Hyper-V), storage area networks (SANs), and certain disk array snapshot applications.
  • All NetBackup Standard Client Functionality – Enterprise Client includes all the functionality provided by Standard Client (see above).
  • VMware vSphere Integration – NetBackup V-Ray Technology protects VMware virtual machines at the host level, eliminating the need for clients or agents within VMs. Perform granular restores within VMs from a single pass VMDK backup, and instantly recover VMs by booting directly from backup disk storage (also requires Data Protection Optimization Option). New VMs are automatically discovered, and are uniquely identified within a vCloud Director environment. Manage backup and restore operations directly from the vCenter console.
  • Microsoft Hyper-V Integration – NetBackup V-Ray Technology protects Hyper-V virtual machines at the host level, eliminating the need for clients or agents within VMs. Perform granular restores within VMs from a single pass VHD backup. Automatically discover new VMs within a Clustered Shared Volume (CSV).
  • Storage Area Network (SAN) Operations – Take advantage of high performance storage area network (SAN) interconnects to send and receive data to and from backup storage that is connected to the SAN. In combination with NetBackup Shared Storage Option, several SAN Media Servers can share tape hardware that is connected to the SAN.
  • Snapshot-enabled Backup and Restore (Snapshot Client) – By using various snapshot technologies provided by third-party hardware or software, backups and restores become faster and less disruptive to production operations. For systems with millions of files, FlashBackup is the ideal solution to bypass file system bottlenecks. Oracle Block-level Incremental Backup makes protecting large Oracle databases manageable (also requires NetBackup App & DB Pack). Snapshot backups utilize supported hardware or software snapshots for fast, nondisruptive backups that can be restored very quickly.

NetBackup Application and Database Pack

This collection of agents provides integration with various application and database technologies and APIs, allowing application-aware and database-aware nondisruptive backup without requiring shut down, as well as facilities to manage log truncation and quiesce or “settle” an application or database prior to a snapshot. These agents must be used in combination with either Standard Client or Enterprise Client.
  • NetBackup for IBM DB2 UDB Universal Database – NetBackup software works with IBM DB2 native backup and recovery utilities to protect DB2 databases and archive logs. NetBackup offers advanced techniques for protecting DB2 databases—from integrated block-level backup and recovery to instant recovery via the NetBackup Snapshot Client (now part of the Enterprise Client).
  • NetBackup for IBM Informix Dynamic Server – NetBackup protects IBM Informix Dynamic Server and IBM Informix Extended Parallel Server running on many of today’s popular operating platforms. NetBackup, in conjunction with the Informix ON-Bar utility, provides a methodology to help ensure that business-critical Informix applications are safely backed up and can be recovered quickly.
  • NetBackup for IBM Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino Server – Symantec offers high-performance backup and recovery for Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino server with NetBackup for Lotus Notes. Administrators can leverage intuitive GUIs to help set consistent backup policies across the enterprise and to quickly identify critical Lotus files or databases when they need to be restored.
  • NetBackup for Microsoft Exchange Server – Symantec recognizes the need for nondisruptive mechanisms to protect Exchange data, along with all data in the enterprise. NetBackup for Microsoft Exchange helps provide the performance and flexibility required for effective backup and recovery operations within large Exchange-based environments.
  • NetBackup for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server – NetBackup for SharePoint extends the capabilities of NetBackup to include online backups and restores of Microsoft SharePoint Server.
  • NetBackup for Microsoft SQL Server – NetBackup for Microsoft SQL Server delivers comprehensive data protection for SQL Server databases through integration with Microsoft VSS and SQL VDI interfaces.
  • NetBackup for Oracle – The NetBackup Oracle Agent is tightly integrated with the Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) to deliver high performance backup and recovery solutions. It supports Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), offers continuous data protection, and can clone Oracle databases from backup images. Intelligent policies automatically discover and protect new databases that come online.
  • NetBackup for Sybase – NetBackup for Sybase offers high-performance backup and recovery for Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) databases on leading UNIX, Linux, and Windows platforms.

NetBackup for SAP

The integration of NetBackup for SAP NetWeaver with the SAP DBA administrative interface, along with the BR backup and recovery commands, provides an integrated, SAP NetWeaver–centric data protection solution for customer specific configurations on the UNIX, Windows, and Linux platforms.

  • Oracle RMAN support — Leverage Oracle RMAN benefits when protecting SAP NetWeaver using Oracle.

NetBackup for Enterprise Vault

NetBackup automates the protection and recovery of Symantec Enterprise Vault archive storage. This functionality is included free-of-charge with the Enterprise Vault product.
  • Simplify protection of Enterprise Vault servers — Automatically discover the various servers and components within your Enterprise Vault environment that need protection, including partitions and their associated databases.

Third Party Integrated Application and Database Agents

Using a special NetBackup API (XBSA) available through the Symantec STEP program, third party vendors can develop agents to protect other applications and databases not supported by the NetBackup Application and Database Pack. These agents can be obtained from the appropriate third party vendor, and must be used in combination with either NetBackup Standard Client or Enterprise Client.
  • EMC Documentum – CYA HOTBackup™, offered by CYA Solutions Group, tightly integrates with NetBackup to deliver a comprehensive hot backup and recovery solution for EMC Documentum.
  • IBM Netezza – NetBackup for IBM Netezza, offered in partnership with IBM, provides centralized backup and recovery of IBM Netezza appliance databases using the XBSA API.
  • MySQL – NetBackup for MySQL, offered in partnership with Zmanda, enables NetBackup to provide centralized backup and recovery of multiple MySQL databases/servers across Linux, Solaris and Windows operating systems. This product is licensed separately through Zmanda.
  • PostgreSQL – NetBackup for PostgreSQL, offered in partnership with Zmanda, provides live backup of PostgreSQL. PostgreSQL agent is integrated and certified with NetBackup 7.x using the XBSA API and supports backup of PostgreSQL versions 8.x and 9.x. This product is licensed separately through Zmanda.
  • Teradata® – Teradata Extension for NetBackup integrates Teradata Database and NetBackup operations to provide a parallel stream backup and recovery solution for Teradata Database Warehouse systems. This product is licensed separately through Teradata.

NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option

NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option is a suite of the most advanced backup and recovery features available today, including source and target deduplication, backup acceleration, automated backup image replication, disk storage pooling, virtual tape optimization, and third-party storage hardware integration.
  • NetBackup Source (client) Deduplication – Client deduplication moves deduplication closest to the source, reducing the size of the data stream and lowering network utilization. Use with any NetBackup client.
  • NetBackup Target (media server) Deduplication – Media server deduplication performs deduplication at the target, relieving production systems from any processing load related to deduplication.
  • NetBackup Accelerator – Complete full backups in the time required for an incremental backup using far fewer resources. NetBackup Accelerator employs block-level change tracking to isolate changed data when performing full backups. A full backup image is then synthesized by combining block-level changes with previous backup data.
  • NetBackup Auto Image Replication (AIR) – Stop putting tapes on trucks. Instead, replicate backup images to a standby remote site for disaster recovery using an optimized OST-certified data mover. Only changes are replicated, reducing the time and resources needed for replication. Consolidate multiple NetBackup domains into a single disaster recovery domain, and execute DR tests independently without impacting your production NetBackup environment.
  • NetBackup Advanced Disk Storage Pooling – Replace or augment traditional tape backup infrastructure with NetBackup disk storage pools, optimized to take advantage of the unique properties of online disk. Media server load balancing ensures backup jobs are automatically allocated to the least busy media server and reroute if a server goes offline, while Storage Lifecycle Policies migrate backup images through multiple tiers of storage (disk, tape, cloud) according to defined schedules and retention rules.
  • NetBackup Virtual Tape Optimization – Optimizes the use of virtual tape libraries (VTLs) with NetBackup. Enhanced duplication creates physical tape copies of virtual tapes using the VTL as the data mover (if supported by the VTL).
  • Third-party Appliance Integration through OpenStorage (OST) – Backup to third-party storage appliances that integrate through the NetBackup OpenStorage interface. With OpenStorage, NetBackup can directly control operations through these devices and take advantage of the unique capabilities of each device, such as deduplication and replication.

NetBackup Replication Director

NetBackup Replication Director offers a single, unified NetBackup interface for end-to-end snapshot management. Replication Director merges disk array hardware snapshot technology with traditional backup and recovery paradigms. All snapshot operations from creation, replication, retention, and expiration can be directly controlled using NetBackup policies in the same way ordinary backups and restores are managed. Integration with each hardware array is enabled through the NetBackup OpenStorage interface, allowing complete control over the unique capabilities of each device, including local snapshots and local or remote replicas.
  • Snapshot Backup – Incorporate hardware snapshot technology into your backup architecture. Snapshots can be managed like regular backups and retained according to preset policies.
  • Snapshot Replication – Utilize hardware replication facilities to copy snapshot backups to other storage locations for redundancy or disaster recovery. Each replica can be customized with its own schedule and retention period.
  • Snapshot Restore – Snapshots and replicas can be indexed for restore, allowing files, directories, or other granular objects to be restored from a snapshot or replica just like a regular backup, without having to locate, mount, and browse the correct snapshot first.
  • Storage Lifecycle Policies – Snapshots can be automatically migrated through subsequent tiers of storage (replica, disk, tape, cloud) according to defined schedules. Customize unique retention periods for each snapshot, replica, and secondary backup image.

NetBackup NDMP Option

Provide reliable, high-performing backup and recovery services for NDMP-enabled NAS to local attached tape, to tape attached to another NDMP-compliant NAS device, or to an existing NetBackup media server.
  • Optimized NAS environments – Create point-in-time snapshots of data on an NDMP-enabled NAS device and leverage the Shared Storage Option to share tape drives between NAS devices and NetBackup Media Servers.
  • Decreased performance impact – Support for Direct Access Recovery greatly reduces the time to restore a single file from tape-resident backup images.
  • Simplified setup – A wizard-driven device configurator reduces the complexity of discovering and configuring NDMP-attached tape resources.

NetBackup Shared Storage Option

Share tape drives across NetBackup media servers on a storage area network (SAN) for enhanced performance and improved utilization of tape drive and library hardware.
  • Minimize backup costs – Increase tape drive utilization and lower the total number of drives required.
  • Rapid deployment – Graphical wizards quickly discover and configure shared tape drives.
  • Increase fault tolerance – Access additional tape resources in the event of a drive or network failure. Supports multiple data paths to tape drives.

NetBackup Vault Option

Keep mission-critical data safely offsite in the event of a disaster by automating the complex and tedious process of tape duplication and offsite media management.
  • Increased efficiency – Automate and track the movement of backup tapes to and from an offsite storage facility.
  • Simplified duplication tasks – Provides redundancy in case the primary backup tape is lost or destroyed, allowing for one copy to be kept onsite and another offsite.
  • Manual ejection of tapes eliminated – Tape ejection is handled automatically based on profiles that determine which tapes should be sent offsite each day.
  • Daily reports – Reports list which tapes are moving offsite and which tapes must be returned onsite. Simply print the report and include it with the daily shipment, or email it to your offsite records management vendor.

NetBackup Media Server Encryption Option

Help ensure that tapes being transported offsite cannot be read in the event they are lost, mishandled, or stolen. Offers superior flexibility and performance by providing parallel, selectable encryption and compression as well as "set and forget" key management.
  • Easier management and control – Enable encryption within the NetBackup policy, eliminating a separate process or an extra dedicated device to manage.
  • Maximum flexibility – Choose what data you want to encrypt and then choose the appropriate compression and encryption strength (AES 128-bit or AES 256-bit).
  • Support for most common backup configurations – Includes support for disk staging to tape, the creation of tape copies for offsite purposes, and the backup of NAS devices (via remote NDMP).

NetBackup OpsCenter Analytics

This backup management and reporting option provides service level tracking, business reporting, and complete customization, providing enhanced visibility over all backup operations.

Symantec Desktop and Laptop Option

Provides continuous disk-based protection and automated file protection for desktops and laptops, whether online or offline. Files can be backed up continuously, on a schedule, or manually.
  • Offline backup and restore – When offline, files are backed up to a local folder. When a connection is restored, data is moved from a local file to the network share.
  • Flexible user restore – Users can easily find and restore their own data wherever and whenever they need it, saving time for both users and IT administrators.
