Sensitive data walking out the door as redundancies increase.
Hi,
As more and more employees leave their jobs due to the economic downturn, research from Symantec suggests they may be taking more than a redundancy payment with them. 59% of those surveyed with access to sensitive and confidential data said they will take it with them when they depart.
Whether it’s looking for a better job or redundancy that leads to individuals leaving employment, 67% of respondents who take personal data with them admitted to actively using that data to help them secure new employment. Data is leaving organisations in every conceivable format from printed lists to emails, office files, database and even software source code. Information is being transported on CD’s, DVD’s as email attachments and USB sticks.
Dr Guy Bunker – Chief Scientist at Symantec is available today and tomorrow for interviews. He can explain: - The most common data theft is by employees leaving companies. - How sensitive data can be taken from a company - What is an employee’s motive for stealing company data - What sort of data is being stolen - Whether UK companies are better equipped to deal with data theft than other countries - How much this type of theft cost businesses
