Faced with the challenges of the current climate of financial prudence and reduced public sector funding, coupled with an ever-growing range of security threats, the Trust decided to review its legacy multi-vendor security strategy and consolidate solutions providers with the aim of driving down costs, simplifying processes and enabling a more holistic approach to protecting its information.
According to Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report, in 2010, attackers unleashed more than 286 million distinct malicious programs, an average of more than nine new threats every second of every day. These threats impact multiple areas of the IT infrastructure with a 93 percent increase in Web-based attacks, 42 percent more mobile vulnerabilities, and 6,253 new vulnerabilities including 14 zero-day vulnerabilities which played a key role in targeted attacks. The risk of data loss is equally a challenge, and a Symantec-sponsored report from the Ponemon Institute revealed that Data breach cost hits UK organisations for £1.9 million per incident in 2010.
As a healthcare provider, patient confidentiality is critical and recent high profile media reports of both inadvertent data loss and malicious data leakage incidents further heightened the need to find a provider who could provide optimal protection against data theft or loss, whilst simultaneously enabling better data sharing and access to services.
The Trust was already a satisfied user of Symantec Enterprise Vault™ for email archiving and Symantec Backup Exec™ but as part of its ‘Symantec 25’ programme, Symantec worked closely with the Trust to identify areas where a new approach could deliver substantial savings. Symantec was able to advise on approach that would deliver those savings without impacting the Trust’s front line services. As a result, the suite of Symantec solutions now includes Symantec Data Loss Prevention and Symantec Protection Suite.
James Norman, Director of Information Management & Technology at The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust says: “The Trust has a big push on information governance and security. We must be alert to the threat of data loss and prevent it occurring. Symantec Protection Suite fits neatly into our strategy to secure the hospital environment and more effectively manage risk at a significantly reduced cost.
“We looked at numerous technologies, but the blend of potential cost savings, the quality of the integrated security technologies, and Symantec’s excellent market reputation all pointed to the company being the right partner to work with.”
The project has enabled the Trust to more reliably identify, monitor and protect its data as well as educate its 4,500 end users on the perils of unguarded technology and prevent Trust staff from sending unencrypted sensitive information via email. Ultimately, improved IT security practice will provide enhanced IT compliance and avoid enforcement action by The Information Commissioner’s Office for any data breach.
Matt Ellard, UK and Ireland Vice President, at Symantec commented: “Today information is the lifeblood of any organisation and the protection and management of this information is absolutely critical, particularly within the healthcare environment, where considerable volumes of sensitive data need to be handled on a daily basis. We also recognise that in today’s current economic climate, there are additional pressures on budgets that need to be taken into account and our ‘Symantec 25’ promise is designed specifically to address those challenges. To work with one of busiest hospital Trusts in the North of England to achieve these costs savings while ensuring the best possible protection of its information is a concrete demonstration of our continued innovation and commitment to our customers.”
