Veritas Storage Foundation for Databases

HA (high availability) versions of Veritas Storage Foundation products include Veritas Cluster Server to automatically detect and recover from database or system failures.

The HA version utilizes a specific, intelligent agent that has been optimized for each database or application (such as DB2, Sybase or Oracle). The agent provides proactive monitoring and management of multi-node environments and enables automatic, policy-based failover. When a system or database failure is detected, all running instances are gracefully shut down before restarting the entire database, file sytem, or application on a separate healthy server. The HA Version also supports manual failover for system upgrades or maintenance. Up to 32 nodes can be centrally managed via a single user interface.

With the HA Version, file sytems, databases and applications can remain online at all times.

Veritas Storage Mapping is implementation of Oracle Mapping API (ORAMAP) that lets Oracle determine the mapping information of files and devices (storage stack). Mapping datafiles of a database on file system or raw devices to underlying device is straightforward. However this mapping gets relatively complex when datafiles are created on state of the art storage subsystems using host based logical volume manager.

Veritas Database Edition's Storage Mapping option lets you take advantage of Oracle File Mapping feature to collect the mapping information of a file to intermediate layer of logical volumes to actual disk and store them in Oracle's dynamic performance views. These views can further be used to locate the disk on which a particular block of a datafile resides. I/O performance can be evaluated using these mapping information along with device statistics.

Veritas FlashSnap allows you to create independently addressable point-in-time snapshots that are copies of mirrors of the volumes on your server. These snapshots can be easily moved to another server for backup or other purposes such as testing or data mining. These activities can be performed without affecting the normal functions of mission-critical servers.

The snapshots may also be kept on the same server for rapid recovery from data corruption issues. You may choose to recovery to the point of the last snapshot or to the point-in-time immediately before the failure. Even when FlashSnap is performed on the same server, its very efficient mirror breakoff and join process is much faster and takes less CPU availability than other mirror breakoff procedures that use ordinary mirroring.

Veritas Volume Replicator adds disaster recovery to Veritas Storage Foundation products. With the Volume Replicator option, data can be replicated from any storage device over any distance on any IP network.
