Symantec Next Generation Network Protection

Symantec Next Generation Network Protection (NGNP) is a network-based policy control and enforcement solution that will allow communication service providers to dynamically apply user preferences in a consistent fashion to a variety of services and bearers. NGNP has been designed to increase provider profitability by increasing subscriber satisfaction, reducing customer churn and reducing costs associated with network misuse, malware proliferation and spam.

Software

Engine Server and Database

  • Linux (RHEL 4.8 Enterprise Server 64 bit)
  • MySQL 5.x

System Administration and Policy Management Console

  • Java swing client and stand-alone Java server
  • Java web application hosted on a JBoss application server

Hardware

The Framework is implemented using stand-alone proxies for interception and filtering of messages. The environment and selection of components depends on the network and solution requirements. However, a typical implementation may contain some or all of the following network elements:
  • Policy Filter Core Processors (SMS/Voice, MMS, Email, Web) - Quad Core Blade and/or Sun Sparc
  • Policy Filter Database Servers - Quad Core Blade and/or Sun Sparc
  • Policy Filter Console Servers (Policy Management, System Administration, Malware Recovery Module, Data Retention) - Quad Core Blade and/or Sun Sparc
  • SMS Policy Enforcement Points for physical SS.7 Acquisition and low-level signal handling
  • Traffic acquisition components, for example deep packet inspection, Cisco SCE, CSG, HTTP Proxy
  • Load Balancers, for example Layer 7 appliances such as Zeus, Alteon, F5
