EUROPEAN NETWORK AND INFORMATION SECURITY AGENCY APPOINTS GIUSEPPE VERRINI TO PERMANENT STAKEHOLDERS’ GROUP
Agency to contribute to development of EU-wide culture of information security
Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in information security, today announced that Giuseppe Verrini, its vice president sales, marketing and services of Europe, Middle East and Africa, has been appointed to the first ever Permanent Stakeholders’ Group of the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA)
ENISA, a new EU-wide initiative, will assist the European Community, EU Commission, individual Member States and the business community in ensuring and meeting high levels of network and information security standards to protect both individuals and enterprises. As vice president and operational leader of Symantec’s European business, Verrini brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge of information security, gleaned over some 31 years in the industry. His appointment is a personal membership as a valued and respected member of the European information security industry.
- Increasingly, people are expressing concern about what happens to personal details, financial information, tax returns and other forms of sensitive data once entered into computerised systems, says Verrini, Symantec’s EMEA vice president, based in Milan. People need to know that information, whether personal or corporate, is secured against unauthorised access but available to them as and when required. Maintaining a secure information infrastructure is now one of our society’s most urgent concerns. Establishing a co-operative partnership between the private and public sectors is a crucial step in creating an environment in which everyone can work and play safely in an increasingly interconnected world.
- Our aim at ENISA is to improve co-operation and information exchange in this area and ultimately to serve as a centre of expertise for both Member States and EU Institutions on matters related to network and information security, says Andrea Pirotti, ENISA’s executive director. As an expert in these fields, Giuseppe Verrini’s appointment to the Permanent Stakeholders’ Group is a very strong indication of ENISA’s commitment to ensuring that we will provide the best advice on security issues to the Community.
- A well-considered approach to information and network security will ultimately contribute to the smooth functioning of the internal market. We are very pleased to have someone of Giuseppe Verrini’s calibre joining the Permanent Stakeholders’ Group.
Verrini adds:
- It is an honour for me to have the opportunity to participate in ENISA in a personal capacity. My knowledge of and long experience in the IT industry have allowed me to develop greater insight on issues within information security, not only across the European Community but also world-wide. This wider perspective will enable me to provide a valuable contribution to ENISA, helping to identify future risks and trends in this area. In addition, my work at Symantec will allow me to provide ENISA and the Permanent Stakeholders’ Group with unique information and industry intelligence when planning.
Symantec is involved in several European-centric public policy groups with security remits, including the EICTA and the BSA. In addition, the company takes an active role in advising on security issues within the IT arena as part of general industry associations, such as the CBI (UK), ICT-Ireland, or Federcommin (Italy) and Bitkom (Germany).
