While companies and individuals are starting to suffer in the economic slowdown, spammers it seems they are just gearing up their activities and actually taking advantage of people’s economic woes in order to reap their personal information.
Symantec’s latest spam report shows how spammers have been trying to promote loan remedies to ‘help’ homeowners relieve their mortgage obligations and avoid negative effects to their credit ratings.
Emails asking users to visit a website are unfortunately aiming to capitalise on the economic situation and prey on those who are facing overwhelming financial pressures. Those visiting the sites and putting up their personal data risk even more economic pain and hardship.
Additional highlights from this month’s report include:
- The recent cyclone in Burma and the earthquake in China have prompted governments and individuals from all over the world to send aid to the affected regions. Predictably, this generosity has not gone unnoticed by spammers. In recent weeks, several spam messages have emerged related to these disasters
- The Champions League Final Tickets Scam targeting fans desperate to get to May’s all English football final in Moscow.
