Symantec Threat Bulletin: Koobface worm on Twitter

Symantec Security Response is currently monitoring a new variant of the W32.Koobface worm that was originally discovered in August 2008. This new variant detected as W32.Koobface.C, and has now come back to haunt us through Twitter.

This worm hijacks Twitter accounts of the infected users and posts tweets to infect the followers. Once an infected user logs on to Twitter, Koobface hijacks the session and posts a tweet to user’s account.

The tweets will include the following messages with a link:
  • My home video :)
  • Watch my new private video! LOL :)
  • michaeljackson' testament on youtube
Users that click the link are redirected to a fake video web site, which will prompt the user to download a codec to watch the video. This codec is detected as W32.Koobface.A.

Symantec advice
  • Be careful what you click on - we advise Twitter users to avoid clicking URLs on tweets, especially if the tweet advertises a home video
