Take Control of Spyware and Adware

What is Spyware?

Spyware is a term used for a kind of software that can get installed on your computer and is capable of collecting your personal information or serving pop up ads (also known as Adware). Spyware programs can also often hinder your computer's performance.

How does Spyware get on my computer?

Spyware and adware often get installed along with free programs you download from the Internet. Or they can make their way onto your machine as you surf the Web, in many cases lurking behind an intriguing pop-up window or fake dialog box.

How would I know if I have Spyware on my computer?

If you notice popup windows even if you are not surfing the web, slow computer performance, or frequent crashes, it's likely that there is some form of spyware or adware running on your system.

What can I do to protect myself from Spyware?

There are a few basic practices we recommend that can help protect you from Spyware. Be selective about what you download to your computer. Read licensing agreements. Watch out for antispyware scams. Beware of programs—especially free ones—that flash clickable ads in the user interface. And keep your Internet browser up to date.

Is there a Symantec product that can help protect me from Spyware?

Absolutely. Our Norton AntiVirus 2006 and Norton Internet Security 2006 products can help protect you from existing and future Spyware programs.
