Phishing scams are perhaps the most common method by which identity theft takes place. Fake emails and websites pose as legitimate organizations, tricking people into divulging passwords, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information. What else can I do to prevent identity theft online?

Here are a few additional tips to help you with spotting identity theft online. Never send your social security number over the Internet. Be cautious with email. Password-protect all your computers, laptops, and PDAs. Try to minimize the amount of personal or financial data on your computer. Install a good firewall program and a good virus protection tool. Finally, never open an email or IM attachment unless you know who sent it and what's inside. And make sure your antivirus software scans both email and IM attachments.

What should I do if I think I've been a victim of identity theft?

If you think you've been a victim of identity theft or credit card fraud, there are few immediate steps you should take to minimize any additional unwanted activity to your accounts. First, it's important to contact any credit card company, banking institution or organization where you think your information has been compromised. You may also want to file a report with your local police agency to be on the safe side.
