Maintaining Healthy Computer Habits

  1. Defragment your hard drive, repair hard disk errors, remove invalid Registry entries, and delete broken shortcuts once a month.
  2. Clean your keyboard, mouse, monitor, and computer on a regular basis. Also, remove any files you don't need, including old programs, temporary files, obsolete data, and Internet cache and histories.
  3. Back up your system and data at least once a month. Create two backups each time, storing them in separate places. And make sure you have an emergency system recovery disk.
  4. Update your operating system and virus protection, renew subscriptions services, and check for new versions of your favorite software at least once a month.
  5. Run a weekly virus detection scan using a trusted virus protection program, and make sure all your security tools, including your virus definitions, are up to date.
