Now that school is back in session (as a Mom, I admit I feel a huge sense of relief whenever summer ends...) our visit to the Boys and Girls Club of Hartford took place at the end of the school day. Remarkably, the children who came running into the club from the school bus, or scampered up the sidewalk after walking from the nearby school all had big smiles on their faces. Clearly, they have a great time at the Club and get some much needed playtime, homework help and attention in a safe, nurturing environment. As they came in, each child greeted the Club director with a handshake and warm smile. It was even more impressive when 50 of the kids were asked to join us for an assembly and they came straight away. They took their seats in the gymnasium and paid great attention as our local honoree, Connecticut Department of Education Associate Commissioner Frances Rabinowitz, read the Faux Paws book. It was great to see how much the kids understood about the need to guard your personal information when you go online. We also presented a new HP laptop to the Club along with a check for $5,000. With our kids back in school, their online activities will increase or at least take them to sites beyond social networking and online gaming. Please make sure you are talking with your children about how to be safe online. You can order my free Family Online Safety Guide and view our top 10 tips for online safety.
Location: New York's Time Square

We hosted the estimated 75,000 people who travel through Times Square during a single day at our truck. Of course, we didn't have quite that many come on board, but it was a very busy day with the sort of bustle and crowds you would expect from New Yorkers winding down their busy summer. Our location was prime Manhattan real estate - we were next to the headquarters of the NASDAQ financial exchange. We also were visited by loads of out-of-town visitors, including a handful of Symantec employees who were in NYC on their own vacations! They were so excited to find a piece of home right there in Times Square!! In the evening we had a little event with some members of the media, and held a "no holds barred" Nintendo Wii Tennis tournament. I gave it my best shot but I'm afraid I need far more practice. Our tournament winner was Jacqueline Emigh, a freelance journalist, who took the nearly 4 foot tall trophy home with her that night. Actually I'm not sure how I would have got that trophy past the airport security so I guess it just wasn't meant to be. Location: Indianapolis, Indiana

We dodged a few rain drops setting up the truck at today's stop - the Boys & Girls Club in Indianapolis, Indiana. But as our program began, the skies cleared up enough that the kids were able to go from the Club to the truck without getting wet. As usual, the kids really liked touring the truck and getting their Hewlett-Packard digital photos taken as souvenirs (lots of beach backgrounds selected at this stop!) And the Nintendo Wii continues to delight our visitors, some of whom have never tried it before! I want to give a special "shout out" to the great truck team: Mickey, Rohan, Becka and Rob - who do everything for the Truck Tour from driving a massive 18-wheeler truck all across North America to engaging kids in educational and fun activities that promote Internet safety. You are all doing a fabulous job!! Today's Kid Assembly was another great event. We were joined by Dr. Suellen Reed, Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Indiana. She did a fantastic job of captivating the kids at the Assembly with her dynamic reading of the "Faux Paws" book. Iris Beckwith, of IkeepSafe.org and I presented Dr. Reed with an award to recognize her work in helping educate children about being safe when online. We were even joined by memebers of the local media, from stations WRTV (ABC); WTHR (CBS) and WNDY (CW Network).
Location: Denver, Colorado
Date: July 19, 2007
On Thursday, July 19th, we brought our truck to the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Denver. We were joined by Colorado Attorney General John Suthers. The Attorney General honored us by visiting with the children of the Boys & Girls Club, reading to them from the iKeepSafe "Faux Paws" book. We were joined by iKeepSafe.org's Marsali Hancock, in giving Attorney General Suthers a special award to recognize his efforts to protect the children of Colorado on the Internet. Our hosts, the dedicated people of Metro Denver's Boys & Girls Club, have a wonderful program, providing after-school and summer programming for thousands of children ages six through teens in the Denver area. The Boys & Girls Club offers sports, arts & crafts, music, tutoring and a comprehensive computer skills curriculum. All the children in the center who are learning computer skills must first go through training on Internet Safety. And all the computers in the center feature filters and other safety software to protect the children while online. The children were so excited to see our big 18-wheeler truck pull up in the parking lot and to meet the iKeepSafe mascot, "Faux Paws, the Techno Cat", in person. We hosted more than 100 children and teens on the truck for some learning about internet safety and a mini-Nintendo Wii tournament! Everyone walked away with a special, free memento of their time on the truck — a Hewlett-Packard digital photo from the Norton Connected and Protected Tour. Location: Mountain View, California

100 school teachers gave us a test – and graded our Connected and Protected Family Safety Tour an A+! We hosted this wonderful group of dedicated math and science teachers at our Mountain View offices for two days of peer training and skills development. On their second day, we brought out the truck and spoke to them about internet safety and their unique challenges with computers in their classrooms. “Your remarks supporting internet security were valuable and the occasion of having the Norton Trailer available was entertaining and informative; playing tennis on the Wii was fun, too!” – commented a Union City, CA teacher

Hello there! We just kicked off our summer truck tour, called the Connected and Protected Family Safety Tour. This one is all about you, the great American and Canadian families working so hard to keep up with new technology and make sure your home computers are protected and geared up for a summer of fun! Check out the tour’s schedule for our visits to your home town. We hope you’ll come out and join us. Our first day was mostly for the Symantec/Norton family – we are featuring our popular newest internet safety products (Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security are just two!), then showcased some cool new photography systems from Hewlett-Packard (get your photo taken when you visit!) and then challenged each other at Nintendo’s Wii Sports. If only my tennis game in real life was as good! And with educational videos from our partner, Ikeepsafe.org, there is something to learn and try around every corner of the truck. Even your younger kids will get something out of it; we have coloring stations and crayons to keep the little ones busy while Mom and Dad get some tech tips and learn about staying safe online. We’ll feature some of our kids’ artwork on this website as we go along. If your own Picasso has some great images of the truck or Ikeepsafe’s mascot, Faux Paws the Techno Cat, please send us a copy! |
