National Software Testing Laboratories Results Reveal that Norton CrashGuard Deluxe is Over Three Times More Effective at Crash Protection and Recovery

Number One Problem PC Users Face is Finally Solved By Norton CrashGuard Deluxe

CUPERTINO, Calif. --November 17, 1997--The test results are in, and the winners are customers who choose Norton CrashGuard Deluxe when looking for the best crash prevention and protection. The experts in utilities at Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), announced today that according to tests conducted for Symantec by the National Software Testing Laboratories (NSTL), the leading testing firm in the computer industry, Norton CrashGuard Deluxe is over three times more effective than competing products in intercepting and fixing crashes.

"These results confirm that Norton CrashGuard Deluxe is now the leading solution for customers for preventing and recovering from computer crashes," said Enrique Salem, vice president and chief technical officer, Symantec Security and Assistance Business Unit. "The NSTL results signify that Symantec is fulfilling the needs of our customers by providing a valuable solution that greatly exceeds the performance of all other products in the category."

The NSTL results found that Norton CrashGuard either enabled the system to continue to operate normally after a crash, or allowed the user enough functionality in the crashed application to save any open documents and prevent data loss. In most testing scenarios, Norton CrashGuard Deluxe enabled the system to fix a problem or allowed the user to save data.

NSTL findings revealed that "Norton CrashGuard Deluxe was, by far, more successful in intercepting and fixing application crashes than the competing applications under all three application categories including 16 bit, 32 bit, and new 32 bit applications."

The NSTL tests also found that in many scenarios, Norton CrashGuard Deluxe was the only product that allowed the test system to continue to function as if no fault had occurred. In addition, in certain test cases, every other competing product actually made systems perform worse than without their product installed.

NSTL was established in 1983, as the world's first independent organization dedicated exclusively to testing the functionality, usability and performance of hardware and software.

Norton CrashGuard Deluxe is now available from Symantec's network of authorized resellers. It has an estimated retail price of $49.95. The full text of the NSTL results can be found on the Symantec website at http://www.symantec.com/crashguard/fs_cg30_95.html.
