Symantec Wins Prestigious Most Valuable Product Awards from PC COMPUTING Magazine
Cupertino, Calif. --November 17, 1997--Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) announced today that three of it's products, Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows 95, Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows 95/NT and Visual Café for Java 2.0 won prestigious 1997 Most Valuable Product (MVP) Awards from PC Computing, the magazine for technology-focused business professionals. The annual awards were announced at the Fall COMDEX computer trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada, Sunday evening.
"I am very proud that our products continue to be honored as the best solutions possible for customer needs. We recognize that there are many products that can help customers protect and maintain their computers, but this type of verification from PC Computing attests to our leading dominant market position," said Gordon Eubanks, president and CEO of Symantec Corporation.
To select the field of 1997 MVP Award winner, PC Computing editors conducted an exhaustive review of thousands of computer hardware, software, Internet and networking products, evaluating them for usability, performance, technology, innovation and value. Such a rigorous review process distinguishes the MVP award from other publications' "best of the year" product awards, since many of those are based on reader polls, popular opinion or widespread appeal.
Winning the MVP award for System Utilities was Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows 95. Norton Utilities 2.0 prevents and fixes computer problems automatically, helping users tune-up and customize their systems and teaching users about their PCs through multimedia innovations. Norton Utilities has been widely recognized as the best software to protect PCs by keeping the computers' hard drive working optimally, and by fixing small problems before they become big ones. Containing Norton CrashGuard with Anti-Freeze, Norton Utilities is the best way to protect the user from losing data as a result of system "crashes" or "freezes". If the user ever experiences a crash or an application freeze, CrashGuard will jump in, fix the problem, and you save your work.
Winning the MVP Award for Antivirus Software was Norton AntiVirus 4.0. Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 4.0 is the industry leader in automatic, comprehensive virus protection for Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 3.1, and DOS workstations. NAV 4.0 provides users with detection and repair of in-the-wild viruses. In addition, NAV 4.0 users receive cutting-edge protection against unknown viruses through Symantec's revolutionary Bloodhound technology. While most anti-virus scanners are only able to identify viruses that have been pre-analyzed by virus researchers, the Bloodhound system uses heuristic technology to analyze programs, detect unknown or new viruses, and enable the user to repair the infected file immediately. NAV 4.0 introduces a new e-mail feature for LiveUpdate. Just by registering e-mail addresses, users are kept informed of the latest virus information. NAV 4.0 also includes Repair Wizard, which simplifies system cleanup after a virus infection. This feature walks the user through the step-by-step cleanup of an infection and removes viruses automatically without damaging files.
