HOUSTON, TX. --December 8, 1997— Visual Numerics, Inc., industry-leading developer of computational,
visualization and Internet software solutions, and Symantec Corporation today announced an agreement to bundle
JNL™ with Symantec's Visual Café for Java 2.0. JNL is the first commercially available numerical library for Java.
Both the Professional Development Edition and Database Development Edition of Visual Café for Java
2.0 will include JNL. It offers numerical classes and data types required by developers for a variety of applications.
JNL also includes classes for complex numbers, matrix and vector operations, and basic statistics. It is the only
commercially available numerical library to have received 100% Pure JavaTM certification.
"Visual Café for Java is one of the industry-leading environments for Java and JavaBeans development.
Offering JNL directly from within the IDE gives developers easy access to advanced numerics," said David Sayed,
product manager for Visual Numerics. "Additionally, bundling JNL with leading development tools reinforces its
position as the de facto standard for Java numerics."
"One of Symantec's top Visual Cafe for Java customer requests is for more libraries," says Alan
Williams, Senior Product Manager for Symantec's Internet Tools Division. "Visual Numerics' JNL is a great addition
because it features complex mathematical classes. Developers can use JNL for scientific applications as well as
data analysis in business."
JNL extends the core Java numerics to allow developers to seamlessly integrate advanced mathematical
and statistical functions into their Java applications. It is used in such diverse applications as: scientific research,
financial engineering, telecommunications, medicine, geophysical and environmental research. JNL is an object-oriented
implementation of several important numerical function classes that minimize network traffic by eliminating trips to the
Web server. This is accomplished by performing processes entirely on the client machine. An open standard, JNL
is designed for extensibility or tailoring to a specific purpose. It is derived from the industry-standard IMSL® Numerical Libraries.
Visual Café for Java 2.0 is the third-generation release of Symantec's award-winning Java development tools Café
and Visual Café. Compatible with Windows® 95, NT 4.0 and Apple® Macintosh, it is designed for developers who
need to write, debug and deploy powerful Java-based Internet and intranet applets and applications.
Visual Café for Java 2.0 Professional Development Edition allows for faster compilation, direct compilation of Java
source to native x86-based code, integrated support for JDK 1.1, JavaBeans and incremental debugging. In
addition, providing this migration path for current owners of Symantec Visual Café and Symantec Café, Visual Café
for Java 2.0 Professional Development Edition maximizes the productivity and performance of Java development.
Visual Café for Java 2.0, Database Development Edition includes Symantec's powerful Java IDE, dbANYWHERE
middleware server solution and Visual Page HTML authoring application. It also includes Netscape FastTrack Web
server, Netscape Communicator Web browser and 100 plus JavaBeans.
