Symantec Releases Version 2.1 of Visual Café for Java Professional Development Edition for Windows 95/NT
New Version of Visual Café for Java Enables Developers to Debug Java Applets from Within Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer
Cupertino, Calif. --December 15, 1997--Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC), the leading provider of Internet development tools, announced today the availability of Visual Café for Java 2.1 Professional Development Edition, an open standard, multi-platform, Rapid Application Development (RAD) Java development tool for writing, debugging and deploying Java applets and applications for the Internet and corporate intranet. Visual Café for Java 2.1 Professional Development Edition is the only Java Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that boosts the productivity of Java developers by providing them with an open platform to test and debug Java applets from within the browsers its customers request most-both Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer, thus ensuring that Java code runs smoothly in both browsers.
A powerful migration path for current owners of Symantec Visual Café and Symantec Café, Visual Café for Java 2.1 Professional Development Edition is designed to maximize the productivity and performance of Java development. In addition to browser context debugging, Visual Café for Java 2.1 Professional Development Edition includes support for JDK 1.1.4 and the new JGL 3.0 release, a JavaBeans Creator BeanWizard — enabling developers to quickly create class and BeanInfo source files by simply stepping through a series of questions — a property-based customizer that provides a unique way to edit the properties of composite JavaBeans and Symantec's Just In Time Compiler (JIT) 3.0.
Also included are Symantec's Visual Page — a powerful HTML Web authoring tool — and Netscape Communicator, which allows developers to evaluate the performance and quality of their Java applets as they develop sophisticated web pages in HTML authoring environments and in popular browsers.
"This power-packed incremental release, coming just one month after Version 2, underlines our commitment to keep our customers at the forefront of Java development, and to bring them open development environments," said Mansour Safai, vice president of Symantec's Internet Tools division. "The Professional Development Edition of the award-winning Visual Café for Java development environment contains every essential, advanced feature that professional software developers tell us they need to create business-critical Java applications and applets."
KEY NEW FEATURES
Visual Café for Java 2.1 Professional Development Edition includes support for the latest Java technology as well as a number of third party APIs, making it the most open, powerful, complete and robust solution for professional Java developers. Key features in this new release include:
Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer debugging. Enables developers to debug any Java applet from within the context of the most popular browsers (requires Navigator 4.04 with JDK 1.1 PR3 patch or IE 4.0.) No other Java development tool offers the flexibility of testing and debugging from within either browser — this enables developers to make use of Java classes that are unique to each browser's Virtual Machine and to preview browser-dependent differences;
Support for JDK 1.1.4. The source editor, interaction wizard, form editor, parser, debugger, and compiler all work with JDK 1.1.4, and developers can code using 1.1.4 APIs, allowing developers to take advantage of the latest in Java technology;
Debugging Support for Virtual Machines. Visual Café for Java 2.1 Professional Development Edition provides debugging support in the Netscape VM, Microsoft Explorer VM and Symantec's own VM;
Property-Based Customizers. Enables developers to edit the properties of composite JavaBeans not accessible or available through the JavaBeans Property List;
Open APIs for Third Parties. Currently more than 100 ISVs in Symantec's Visual Café for Java Coalition program are upgrading their tools to extend Visual Café for Java capabilities with the open API architecture. Included are VTune JIT API, Data Binding API, VCS API, and the Java Project Templates API;
Just-in-Time (JIT) Compiler 3.0. Enhancements have been implemented in the compiler to make it even faster; it is now the fastest shipping JIT compiler ever —faster than Microsoft's Virtual Machine according to several benchmarks including Caffeinemark, jMark and BYTEMARK.
ADDITONAL 2.1 FEATURES
Visual Page HTML Web authoring and publishing tool. Applets created within Visual Café for Java can be dragged and dropped into a full-featured web authoring environment Visual Page, allowing developers to easily preview applets and to build web pages around them;
Netscape Communicator. Java applets can be run and viewed in this popular Java-enabled browser;
Compilation of pure Java source to byte-code or native executables. The Win32 compiler allows developers to take pure Java source code and compile it directly to native x86 code, automatically generating a fast, stand alone Windows executable application;
Advanced debugging. Incremental debugging enables the developer to make changes to the source code while the application is running and dramatically reduces development time by eliminating the typical edit/save/recompile/debug cycle. It also allows a developer to interactively compile and debug individual methods as the applet or application is running, while remote debugging offers developers more options and flexibility in their debugging cycle;
Drag-and-drop JavaBeans. JavaBeans can be incorporated into applications by inserting or by dragging and dropping them into the Form Editor; all components (over 100) included with Visual Café for Java Professional Development Edition are now JavaBeans. With Symantec's unique introspection method, more third party JavaBeans properties can be viewed and modified than in any other Java development environment. The latest version of JavaSoft's JFC library is included in the component library;
Conversion of JDK 1.02 projects to JDK 1.1.4 format. Projects are automatically converted from JDK 1.02 to JDK 1.1.4 with a click of a button, enabling existing Java development projects to be leveraged;
Bundling and JAR (Java archive) support. Reduces the size of applications and applets by employing ZIP/JAR compression for easy distribution;
Insert Class Wizard. The new Insert Class Wizard gives developers the ability to extend classes and overwrite methods easily;
Other third party additions. The following third party tools are also included:
Visual Café for Java Product Line
- Object Space's JGL: A collection of high quality algorithms and containers for use by professional developers;
- Object Design's PSE for Java: A personal object database which allows developers to write applications and applets with persistence;
- Starbase Versions Control.
- Visual Numerics. JNL. An advanced numeric library;
- KL Group. A set of professional and chart components.
