PC Data Figures Show Symantec Led U.S. Corporate Market in 1997
Symantec corporate reseller market share is double that of #2 vendor
Cupertino, Calif. --February 4, 1998--Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) led the US corporate anti-virus market in 1997, according to figures released by independent research firm PC Data.
PC Data researches sales from 80 percent of US corporate resellers. Its research shows that Symantec sold over 2.7 million anti-virus units last year, representing 59 percent of the corporate market – almost double that of second place Network Associates (Nasdaq: NETA) which sold just under 1.4 million units for 30 percent market share. According PC Data, Dr Solomon's (Nasdaq: SOLLY) was fifth behind IBM and Cheyenne with just 1 percent market share from 26,540 units sold.
For the December quarter 1997, Symantec sold 989,914 units, giving a 59 percent share of the corporate market. Network Associates was second with 22 percent market share (378,355 units) with Dr. Solomon's in sixth place with 0.12 percent of the market (1,875 units).
In terms of anti-virus revenue for the December 1997 quarter, Symantec was also number one with 43 percent market share with Network Associates and Dr. Solomon's achieving market share of 36.5 percent and 2.2 percent respectively.

The fact that we are meeting our corporate customers' needs with this multi-tiered protection strategy, coupled with the launch of version 4.0 of Norton AntiVirus in the second half of 1997, has produced these figures," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance business unit.
The PC Data figures come just days after PC Data also revealed that in December 1997 four of the top ten Windows business software products were made by Symantec – more than any other vendor. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 was in third and seventh positions with the Standard and Deluxe editions respectively, with Norton Utilities and Norton Uninstall Deluxe in fourth and ninth slots.
Also for the December quarter, Symantec announced its fifth consecutive record quarter for profit and revenue. At $148.2 million, revenue was up 20 percent over the same quarter in 1996. And for calendar year 1997, revenues also increased 20 percent.
