Norton AntiVirus Wins Internet Computing's 'Net Best' Award

NAV 4.0 for NT Servers Outperforms Server-based Competitors in Virus Detection

Cupertino, Calif. --March 20, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC), the worldwide leader in utilities and anti-virus software, today announced that Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 4.0 for Windows NT Servers was awarded Internet Computing's 1998 "Net Best" award in an anti-virus comparison feature in the March issue. Symantec's Norton AntiVirus beat out product competitors from Dr. Solomon, Trend Micro, IBM, and Computer Associates.

The Net Best recognition is added to an expanding list of recent honors awarded to Norton AntiVirus, including PC Magazine's "Editor's Choice" in the magazine's 1998 Utility Guide, PC World's "Best Buy," PC Computing's "A-List," and Network Computing's "Editor Refuses to Give it Back!"

Internet Computing's anti-virus review focused on the enterprise. Editors tested products "that provide domain management utilities for coordinating and scheduling anti-virus sweeps over a multitude of network servers and clients," according to the magazine.

The magazine's ZD (Ziff Davis) Internet Lab reviewed five server-based products for the review. NAV's Net Best award places it as the top product that outperformed Dr. Solomon's Anti-Virus Toolkit 7.78, IBM's AntiVirus 3.0 Enterprise Edition, Trend Micro's ServerProtect 4.52, and Computer Associate's InocuLAN 4.

"The Net Best award assures administrators they can trust Norton AntiVirus to protect their Windows NT Servers," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "Norton AntiVirus's powerful solution is being used by both administrators and desktop users as the most complete protection for their systems."

Internet Computing reported Norton AntiVirus as "leader of the pack" of server-based anti-virus products. "Its dependable scanning engine, inviting user interface, and easy access to Web-based virus definition updates (through LiveUpdate) made NAV for Windows NT Server our Net Best Pick," as stated by the magazine.

For the review, the anti-virus products were tested on scanning speed and detection of viruses. Norton AntiVirus was one of only two of the five tested products that caught one of the more elusive of the 11 virus strains in the test sample.

Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows NT Servers is part of Symantec's award-winning suite of multi-tier virus protection products designed to protect the enterprise at the desktop, groupware, server, Internet, and gateway levels. Norton AntiVirus uses revolutionary Bloodhound technology to provide user with detection and repair of both known and unknown viruses. Norton AntiVirus also includes LiveUpdate, which automatically updates users with the latest virus definitions, either at the click of a button or scheduled in advance.
