Norton Utilities Named Consumers Digest "Best Buy"

Cupertino, Calif. --March 20, 1998-- Symantec Corporation, the worldwide leader in utilities and antivirus, (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that Norton Utilities (NU) 2.0 was selected as a "Best Buy" in the March/April 1998 issue and Personal Computer Buying Guide of Consumers Digest, one of the world's most influential and trusted magazines. Since January 1998, NU's successor-Norton Utilities 3.0-has earned positive reviews from many of the leading computing magazines, including Windows Magazine, PC Computing, InformationWeek, Computerworld, CNET, PC World, PC Novice/Smart Computing, and Windows Sources.

A Consumers Digest Best Buy is defined as a product that offers outstanding value for its price. The publication's contributors and reviewers categorize a best buy as a product that merits special attention from buyers.

"We're honored that Norton Utilities has been singled out as a cost-competitive performer in the utilities arena," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "We're especially pleased that this distinction comes from a publication that has become one of the most reliable sources of factual information that consumers can find today."

According to Consumers Digest, Best Buy recommendations are based on criteria derived from at least three of the following sources: 1) Independent testing and research studies, including those from academic and professional institutions and federal, state, and other government agencies, where applicable; 2) Consumers Digest reader and other surveys; 3) Previously published evaluations in books, magazines, newsletters, etc.; 4) Retail dealers, including their service departments; 5) Other independent sources; and 6) Personal (hands-on) evaluation by the authors.

Only four utilities products made the Best Buy list this year. In reviewing Norton Utilities 2.0, editors wrote, "This Windows 95-only version features a solid array of tools, such as System Doctor, which examines your hardware for potential problems and corrects them; Disk Doctor, which locates and fixes corrupt files; Space Wizard, which deletes unused files; and Speed Disk, which defragments and optimizes your hard disk."

Headquartered in Chicago, Consumers Digest offers "practical advice on subjects of interest to consumers: products and services, automobiles, health, fitness, consumer legal affairs, personal money management, etc." in a bimonthly publication. Established in 1959, the magazine has a circulation of approximately 1.5 million.
