1998 JavaOne Developer Conference (SM), San Francisco --March 26, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC), the leading provider of Internet development tools, announced today the immediate availability of Visual Café for Java 2.5 Professional Development Edition and Database Development Edition. Visual Café for Java Version 2.5 is Symantec's popular, open standard, extensible Rapid Application Development (RAD) Java software development tool for writing, debugging and deploying platform independent Java applets and applications. Visual Café for Java Version 2.5 offers the ultimate in performance, flexibility and ease of use, making it the tool of choice for professional Java developers seeking to develop and deploy enterprise-level Java applications.

"Symantec understands that enterprise application developers rate development tools by the power of their features, flexibility, performance, ease of use and adherence to open standards," noted Mansour Safai, vice president of Symantec's Internet Tools division. "Version 2.5 of Visual Café for Java was built with these criteria foremost in our minds, and enables developers to build large scale, mission critical applications that execute quickly and reliably, and that can be scaled to address the needs of the most challenging enterprise applications."

Visual Café for Java 2.5 Professional Development Edition builds on the intuitive interface and unrivalled productivity strengths of this award-winning Java Integrated Development Environment (IDE) by adding a customizable user interface, the ability to turn automatic code generation off, Year2000 compatibility and Open API (application program interface) enhancements that make Visual Café for Java the most flexible and extensible third generation Java development tool available.

Alta Software, a systems integrator located in Reston, VA., recently developed a custom Java application that configures an intelligent, universal protocol "interworking" device from a leading vendor of networking solutions for the Internet. The device solves the problem of network-to-network and network-to-customer interconnections, enabling signaling to be transmitted among diverse sets of voice protocols and applications. The Java application that Alta developed provides a Java front end for the complex task of maintaining and updating the device's configuration. Jack Crosby, Vice President of Operations at Alta Software, said, "Visual Café was the tool of choice for the Alta developers; they chose it after hands-on use of several development tools. Visual Café has paid off in efficiency and ease of use." For more information, see http://www.altasoft.com.

NesTek Development Corporation, one of Western New York's leading software development and system integration firms, used Visual Café for Java to develop a problem management system for Xerox Corporation. The Xerox Problem Management System caters to as many as 400 simultaneous users who use the system to record and track the identification and resolution of hardware and software problems. Bill Keenan, NesTek's vice president of Business Development, stated, "Our extensive use of Visual Café for Java has demonstrated to us that Symantec has risen to the challenge of enabling systems integrators to provide sophisticated Java solutions for their clients. Additionally, Visual Café for Java provided us with significant time and resource savings." For more information, see http://www.javasoft.com/features/1998/01/nestek.html
