Symantec Announces Integration between Symantec's ACT! 4.0 and Microsoft Outlook 98
ACT! 4.0 Moves to Forefront of Contact Management Category with Outlook 98 Integration
Cupertino, Calif --March 31, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the integration between Symantec's new ACT! 4.0 contact manager and Microsoft's Outlook 98, the premier messaging and collaboration client from Microsoft. This product integration, part of a more comprehensive strategic partnership between the two market-leading companies, follows closely on the previous announcement of the inclusion of Symantec's WinFax Starter Edition in Outlook 98.
The integration of Outlook's World-Class messaging with ACT!'s World-Class Contact Management will significantly increase the productivity of both ACT! 4.0 and Outlook 98 users. ACT! 4.0 and Outlook 98 users now have the ability to e-mail contacts, calls, meetings and to-do's to each other. From within ACT! 4.0, users can take any contact and attach it to an e-mail message, then mail it to an Outlook 98 user who can then merge the contact into the Outlook 98 address book. Outlook 98 users can also e-mail contacts to ACT! 4.0 users who then merge the contact into their ACT! database. Exchange of activities is just as simple. When scheduling an activity in the ACT! 4.0 or Outlook 98 calendar, there is now an option to e-mail the activity to any ACT! 4.0 or Outlook 98 user.
"We are pleased to be working with Microsoft to provide customers with solutions that will enhance their ability to communicate and exchange contact information," said Christopher Calisi, vice president of Symantec's Remote Productivity Solutions Group. "We look forward to working with Microsoft further to provide new levels of integration between ACT! and Outlook."
"Outlook 98 and ACT! 4.0 work great together. Outlook 98 provides complete e-mail, schedule and information management for business users, and ACT! 4.0 is a fully customizable contact manager for building business relationships, " said Jon DeVaan, vice president at Microsoft Corporation. "Using Internet standards to integrate these products provides many benefits to customers of both Microsoft and Symantec."
The integration of the two products is based on the Internet data exchange standards known as vCard and vCalendar. These standards, specified by the Internet Mail Consortium (IMC), enable products to share calendar and business card information. This was the starting point for the companies to begin work on integrating the products. Greater integration is expected over time.
Recently, Symantec announced ACT! 4.0, the newest version of its contact manager. ACT! is for business professionals and small workgroups whose day revolves around their business relationships. ACT! allows users the ability to store and access extensive customer information, build and maintain relationships and manage simple sales processes. ACT! 4.0 extends customer databases with the world of Internet information, delivers superior integration with communication tools such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook 98, and provides the power users are looking for in a familiar and easy-to-use interface.
ACT! 4.0 is ideal for users who say "My customer is more than a name or address", or "I need to prioritize my day around the activities that help me increase my business."
