News Release
Symantec Introduces the Visual Café Technology Preview Center
for 2.5 Customers
Cupertino, Calif --May 4, 1998-- 1998-Symantec Corporation (NYSE: SYMC)
launched the Technology Preview Center, a web site that will contain a
repository of technology previews that provide customers the
functionality they need to develop enterprise-level applications using
Visual Café
for Java . Symantec will be releasing the previews to
solicit input from Visual Café customers to ensure that upcoming
products provide an open solution for their enterprise needs. The
first technology preview, an open interface to most popular version
control software, is posted at
http://café.symantec.com/techpreview/
The previews are offered for download on the Symantec web site at no
cost and are usable for 90 days.
The first technology preview - now available at
http://café.symantec.com/techpreview/ - is the Visual Café SCC Bridge
which offers support for version control systems compatible with the
Microsoft Source Code Control (SCC) Interface. This is done using a
plug-in that acts as a bridge between the Visual Café for Java Version
Control Interface and the Microsoft SCC Interface. This Visual Café
for Java preview will allow developers to easily integrate with any
version control solution that utilizes the SCC API. The following
version control software solutions have been tested with Visual Café
for Java 2.5:
Intersolv PVCS Version Manager version 5.3
Microsoft Visual SourceSafe (VSS) versions 4.0 and 5.0
MKS Source Integrity version 7.3
StarBase Versions version 2.0
Teams of software developers working on the same project rely on
version control systems to keep their source code consistent. Like a
library, version control lets only one developer at a time check out
the piece of code they want to work on. Once checked out, no one else
can make changes to that code until the developer working on it
relinquishes it for others to use.
