News Release
Milkyway Networks SecurIT Firewall to Ship with Norton AntiVirus
Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC), the worldwide leader in utilities and anti-virus software,
today announced that Milkyway Networks, a leading worldwide provider of enterprise network security
solutions, has selected Norton AntiVirus (NAV) as its preferred anti-virus solution. Milkyway is
pleased to announce that Norton AntiVirus is now compatible with SecurIT FIREWALL 4.0 for Solaris,
and the trialware version of NAV will be included in all shipments of Milkyway's product. Any
existing customers can obtain an update by calling Milkyway directly at 1-800-499-2530.
Symantec's Norton AntiVirus for Firewalls provides SecurIT FIREWALL with a powerful first line
of defense against virus threats by intercepting and destroying incoming viruses in real time-before
they reach beyond the corporate walls and through the Internet to clients, customers, and other
digital domains. Responses to new virus threats are developed by the Symantec AntiVirus Research
Center (SARC) and are made available to users via LiveUpdate, which provides automatic, schedulable
access to the latest virus definition updates.
"Just as the rollout of SecurIT FIREWALL for Solaris represents a broadening of Milkyway's
line of security products, the incorporation of Symantec's Norton AntiVirus for Firewalls in
our firewall product represents a new level of protection we can provide our growing customer base,
" said Ian Ferguson, president, Milkyway Networks. "We believe that Norton AntiVirus for
Firewalls is the most effective anti-virus solution for our customers."
SecurIT FIREWALL for Solaris is built on the simple premise that if a company's network
can't be seen, it can't be penetrated. As an application-level firewall, SecurIT FIREWALL
provides a higher level of security than packet filters or hybrid-type solutions such as stateful
inspection. The firewall is invisible to users on the network and supports one-time authentication
for all applications passing through the firewall on a per-rule basis. Furthermore, Milkyway's
Black Hole technology does not discriminate between "inside" or "outside" of
the firewall, giving you the ultimate in flexibility and security for Internet, intranet and
extranet implementations.
Norton AntiVirus for Firewalls gives industry-leading NT and UNIX firewalls continuous,
comprehensive protection from Internet-spread viruses. Developed in close consultation with leading
firewall vendors, Norton AntiVirus for Firewalls scans Internet traffic and file attachments,
removes any viruses before they invade a computer network, and repairs damaged files. Flexible
remote administration and minimal performance impact make it easy to deploy at the corporate
gateways.
The Norton AntiVirus product line includes a multi-tier strategy that integrates products at the
desktop, server, Internet gateway, and firewall to provide users with the most comprehensive virus
detection and repair. The products provide users the security of knowing they have the most complete
protection available, whether downloading files from the Internet, opening attached Word documents,
or accessing floppy disks.
Symantec AntiVirus Research Center SARC is the industry's largest dedicated team of virus
experts. With offices located in the United States, Japan, Australia, and the Netherlands, the sun
never sets on SARC. The center's mission is to provide swift, global responses to computer
virus threats, proactively research and develop technologies that eliminate such threats, and
educate the public on safe computing practices. As new computer viruses appear, SARC develops
identification and detection for these viruses, and provides either a repair or delete operation,
thus keeping users protected against the latest virus threats.
