Symantec Reports Strong Customer Response to Anti-Virus Alliance with
Cupertino, Calif. --June 2, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today reported
that within days of announcing its anti-virus alliance with IBM thousands of customers have
requested information about upgrading to Norton AntiVirus, including several corporations
representing more than 100,000 units.
As a result of the agreement, IBM and Symantec will combine their technologies to extend
the Norton AntiVirus multi-tier strategy, including new products for IBM platforms, such as OS/2,
within six months. The two companies also intend to sell the entire line of products worldwide. In
addition, IBM has also assigned its existing anti-virus customer and OEM contracts to Symantec and
will recommend the current Norton AntiVirus line of products to its customers as the product of

IBM Customers transition to Symantec Norton AntiVirus
"We are looking to the future. Our partnership with IBM and the addition of their immune
technology will have enormous benefits for customers. Combining Norton AntiVirus and the immune
system will enhance our ability to quickly detect new and unknown viruses, create a fix and
distribute it across the customer's network. We will deliver a highly automated and scalable
system with the fastest response time possible."
Commenting on the reaction of competitors to the Symantec and IBM partnership, Enrique Salem said:
"Network Associates (Nasdaq: NETA) and Dr. Solomons (Nasdaq: SOLLY) have tried to convince IBM
anti-virus customers to remove a product which they have already paid for and replace it with theirs
for the life of the current license. Once the contract is up they would charge for the renewal.
There is nothing extraordinary about that. Customers recognize this and are upgrading to Norton
Symantec and IBM have communicated a comprehensive transition program to help customers move to
Norton AntiVirus. This includes a conversion software program, which can be deployed to uninstall
IBM's anti-virus software and install Norton AntiVirus. There is no charge for customers to
migrate to Norton AntiVirus and information packs including current versions of the Norton AntiVirus
family of products have been sent to customers.

Peter Rogers of Volpe Brown Whelan & Co agrees: "We do not view the announcements by Dr.
Solomons and Network Associates as having any impact on our projections for Symantec."
