Symantec Announces First Telecommuting Productivity Solution
- pcTelecommute provides powerful, easy-to-use tools in one
integrated solution -
Cupertino, Calif. --June 8, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC), the worldwide
leader in PC communications software, today announced pcTelecommute, the industry's first
telecommuting productivity solution. pcTelecommute is easy-to-use and provides integrated features,
productivity tools, and support that will help make telecommuting easier to implement.

professionals to work from various remote locations. pcTelecommute has been specifically designed
to meet the needs of individuals that work from home one to three days per week," said
Christopher Calisi, vice president of Symantec's Remote Productivity Business Unit.

need in one package."
According to a Gartner Group report, there will be an estimated 55 million telecommuters by the year
2000. A survey conducted by Telecommute America Week shows that the number one reason why people
telecommute is to be more productive. Telecommuting allows organizations to hire and retain
employees in today's competitive employment environment which assists organizations in
maintaining a competitive advantage. Telecommuters are able to eliminate and reduce lost commuting
time and costs. They are better able to manage interruptions, improve their personal productivity,
and maintain a better family balance and quality of life.
pcTelecommute Provides Increased Productivity
pcTelecommute provides the tools that telecommuters need to be more productive. Work Monitor provides users with an activity log that tracks files
accessed, phone calls made and received, and faxes sent and received during the day. With this
information, users can easily create a status report for their use or for submitting to their
manager.
DayEnd SyncTM allows users to keep their office PC up-to-date with the most current versions of
files when they work from home. pcTelecommute reminds the user at the end of their telecommuting
workday which files have changed and prompts them for an automatic file synchronization with their
office PC.
Call Screening lets users control their interruption level and further increase their productivity
by allowing them to see who is calling. This technology is available directly from the PC and
utilizes their CallerID service provided by their local telephone company.
In order to best meet the comprehensive needs telecommuters, pcTelecommute also include "Tips
for the Productive Telecommuter," video clips by Gil Gordon, a leading telecommuting
consultant. Users will also receive "The Telecommuter's Advisor" by June Langhoff, a
noted author in the telecommuting field.
Power Communications for Easy Access
pcTelecommute provides powerful communications capabilities utilizing technology from market leading pcANYWHERE and WinFax PRO. With pcTelecommute, users can
access information from their office PC using remote control technology from pcANYWHERE. Users can
also transfer files between the home and office.
pcTelecommute is also compatible with pcANYWHERE 8.0. This allows the company help desk to remotely
support telecommuters in their organization.
pcTelecommute also includes fax functionality. Users can send and receive faxes from their desktop,
which allows them to keep in touch with co-workers, managers, and clients.
Ease of Use Capabilities
pcTelecommute provides an integrated user interface for enhanced ease of
use. The Telecommute Control Center is a toolbar-like interface that gives users a centralized
place to access all functionality within pcTelecommute.
The product also includes an easy-to-use installer with wizards that will walk through the
installation and set-up of all applications and configurations of both the home and office PC.
Pricing and Availability
pcTelecommute will be available in August, 1998 for an estimated retail
price of U.S. $99.95. The product includes 7x24 technical support in North America free for 90
days. After 90 days, additional support can be purchased on a per call basis or by flat fee. The
product also includes Internet Explorer 4.0, a NETCOM 30 day free trial offer, and a phone line
splitter. A 30 day trial version will also be available.
System Requirements
pcTelecommute requires an 80486 DX2/66 MHz processor, 8MB RAM and 35MB free hard
disk space, VGA video, CD-ROM drive, fax modem required and CallerID capable modem recommended.
pcTelecommute is compatible with Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT Workstation and Server 4.0.
