Symantec's pcANYWHERE32 8.0 Wins PC Magazine Editors' Choice Award

-- Product outperforms seven competitors in remote control; editors call it 'fast, secure, and full-featured-truly the best way to access a PC from anywhere' --

Sunnyvale, Calif --August 10, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the worldwide leader in utility software for business and personal computing, today announced that pcANYWHERE32 8.0 won PC Magazine's renowned Editors' Choice Award. In the September 1, 1998 issue, the publication's editors selected pcANYWHERE32 8.0 as the top remote-control solution. Earlier this year, pcANYWHERE32 was named to Windows Magazine's influential WinList and received Network Computing's Editors' Choice award as well as the 1998 Mobility Software Product of the Year award from Mobile Insights.

Editors carefully tested each of the eight competing products for remote control and file transfer, as well as ease-of-use and security. As a result of the tests, editors concluded, "Symantec Corp.'s pcANYWHERE commands a significant share of the remote-control market. After testing the latest version, pcANYWHERE32 8.0, it's easy to see why. The program supports a vast array of platforms; offers comprehensive remote-control, file-transfer, and security features; and consistently delivers above-average performance. Editors lauded pcANYWHERE's multiplatform support, which includes Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 3.x, and DOS, and noted that it also offers Windows CE and browser-based clients. Reviewers also remarked on the product's "extra" remote-control features, including its ability to switch from data to voice or video conferencing during remote-control sessions as well as its ability to synchronize the video resolution of the host to the guest.

Particularly noteworthy, according to editors, were pcANYWHERE's security features. Reviewers commented that in addition to user names, groups, and passwords, the product supports the Microsoft Crypto API. In addition, reviewers wrote, "We also liked its ability to authenticate users with the Windows NT user manager and domains. pcANYWHERE stores any intrusion alerts in its own log file or the NT Event Log. Other security features let you control drive access, limit a user's connection time, and automatically reboot the host on disconnect."

Editors concluded their reviews saying, "Whether you're planning to squeeze a few extra hours out of each workday by dialing in from home or need a company-wide remote-control solution, pcANYWHERE is the answer . . .
