Pilot Program offers Symantec Moble Update for Free

-For A Limited Time, Eligible Customers Can Get A Free Site License For Award-Winning Symantec Mobile Update -

Cupertino, Calif --August 17, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) the leader in mobile software applications, announced today a pilot program that provides free site licenses of Symantec Mobile Update to potential customers. Released in June, Symantec Mobile Update is a client/server application designed to allow mobile professionals to keep up-to-date with critical files and documents via e-mail. Valued at more than $800 for the 10-user license, the offering demonstrates how, in their own environment, mobile professionals can utilize Symantec Mobile Update to provide instant updates to critical document changes from any location.

"We are offering Symantec Mobile Update to potential on-the-go customers to demonstrate how easily this solution provides an automatic way to quickly and efficiently stay up-to-date on any changes to key documents," said Christopher Calisi, vice president of Symantec's Remote Productivity Solutions Business Unit. "With this opportunity, customers have the chance to see firsthand, the tremendous benefit this product can provide to mobile professionals."

Customers that are eligible for the program will receive a free 10-user license of Symantec Mobile Update and one free copy of Norton Mobile Essentials. They will also receive free technical support for the duration of the program and a quick start guide for easy installation. If they choose to buy 10 or more additional licenses of the product, they will also receive 10 free copies of Norton Mobile Essentials.

Eligible customers must have at least 50 computers to participate in the pilot program. Customers must also be running an NT server and an e-mail system that is supported by Symantec Mobile Update. The program is scheduled to run through September 1998. Customers can access information about the Symantec Mobile Update pilot program from Symantec's web site at www.symantec.com.

Symantec Mobile Update helps keep mobile employee up-to-date with critical information and significantly reduces the costs of mobile ownership by reducing the size of document updates by as much as 95 percent. For mobile professionals, e-mail is the most popular and reliable connection to the network and one of the easiest ways to send and receive information. Mobile Update combines Symantec's proprietary "delta" technology with binary compression to ensure that document changes are packaged and compressed in the smallest format possible and then sent to the user as e-mail attachments. For example, if cells in a spreadsheet or text in a presentation are changed, they are seamlessly updated on the client from within the user's e-mail. This dramatically decreases the download times and alleviates the frustration faced by mobile users.

System Requirements
Mobile Update requires either a Novell or NT Network Operating Systems. On the server, Mobile Update requires a Windows NT 4.0 Server/Workstation, 133 Mhz. or better, 32 MB of RAM and 20 MB of hard disk space. For the client it requires a PC with 80486 or higher processor, 8 MB of RAM, 10 MB hard disk space, and Windows 95/Windows NT. Mobile update operates with the following mail systems: cc:Mail - 6.x, Lotus Notes - 4.x, Microsoft Mail, Exchange 5.0/5.5 and any SMTP server.
