Symantec Internet Tools Launches Academic Partnership Program
Cupertino, Calif --August 24, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced
a new program that will establish long-term partnerships with accredited academic institutions.
Symantec's Educational Curriculum Program will offer unlimited classroom use of the company's
award-winning Visual Café for Java products, and forge strong relationships that include beta
program participation and academic training centers.
"We're extremely pleased to offer what we believe is an excellent opportunity for students of
technology to learn state-of-the-art Java methodology using the most advanced Java IDE available,"
remarked Mansour Safai, vice president of Symantec's Internet Tools Division. "Symantec greatly
values the technological discourse that results from partnerships with these leading institutions.
The enthusiasm with which our initial invitation is being received is validation of our belief that
Visual Café for Java will be an extremely useful resource for most colleges and universities."
"With the Java environment evolving so rapidly, it can be very expensive -- or impossible -- for
educators to keep their lab software up to date," noted William Burrows, Senior Lecturer at
University of Washington Business School. "Symantec's Educational Curriculum Program eliminates this
potential barrier and makes it possible to expose students to the most current Java technology,
delivered with Symantec's outstanding Visual Café for Java IDE."
"UCI's Information and Computer Science Department has been using Symantec's Cafe and Visual Cafe in
courses on introductory computer science, user interfaces and even computer literacy for non-majors.
It's also enabling research projects on intelligent agents and data mining," said Dr. Michael J.
Pazzani, Chair of the Department of Information and Computer Science at the University of
California, Irvine. "We've found it easy for novices to get started and powerful enough to support
advanced users. Symantec's Academic Curriculum Program ensures that we'll be able to provide the
latest development environment to our students."
"Visual Café is a great educational building block, because it allows students, staff and faculty
with no Java background to get their feet wet, yet it also supports software development to any
degree of sophistication," said Dr. Jack Hodges, Associate Professor of Computer Science at San
Francisco State University. "The Symantec program will allow us to use a state-of-the-art tool set
that meets our needs now, and will do so in the future, as well."
"We've been using Symantec's Visual Café for various projects, and students are most impressed by
the power of the various Symantec Java APIs, which have significantly cut the overall development
time of those projects," said Dr. Stanley Wang, Associate Professor of Computer Science at the
California State University San Marcos. "Thanks to Symantec's newly introduced Academic Partnership
Program, we're now offering several new Java courses through our regular curriculum as well as
extended studies. The new courses use Symantec's Visual Café, one of the most powerful rapid
development tools available. We expect it will substantially reduce students' learning curves and
students will become proficient much more quickly."
"Thanks to Symantec's program, roughly 100 graduate students will be using Visual Cafe Professional
Development Edition this Fall," said Dr. Bernice M. Folz, Director of Graduate Programs in Software
at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. "These are students who already work in
business and industry. On the undergraduate side, Visual Cafe will be used in both Object-Oriented
Design and Programming courses and in a Topics course."
About the Visual Café Educational Curriculum Program Symantec Corporation is offering the free
classroom use of Symantec Visual Café and Visual Page to support full-time Java curricula within

education. Special consideration will be given to the institutions when beta programs for future
releases of Visual Café are offered; other feedback and suggestion forums will also be established.
To apply for the program, representatives of accredited colleges or universities are invited to send
email to professordirect@symantec.com.
