Symantec Releases JITspeed for Netscape Communicator and Navigator

- Industry's Fastest Just In Time Compiler Provides Dramatically Improved Java Performance -

Cupertino, Calif --August 31, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC) announced today the availability of its industry-leading Just-in-Time (JIT) Compiler, JITspeed, for use with Netscape Communicator or Navigator 4.x. Working within the Netscape browser, JITspeed provides on-the-fly translation of Java code into machine code for dramatically improved performance of Java-rich Web pages and applications. In addition, JITspeed generates code that is optimized better than any other JIT, which results in faster execution of the Java applets.

JITspeed features easy, one-step installation. Netscape Communicator and Navigator users can download JITspeed quickly, install it in seconds and immediately take advantage of enhanced Java performance.

A refinement of Symantec's JIT 3.0, JITspeed results in Java applets running up to 200% faster (for benchmark results visit http://www.symantec.com/domain/cafe/jit.html). JITspeed can be quickly set up through a foolproof, one-step installation process. JITspeed is used by Navigator and Communicator to compile Java code into machine code when Web pages containing Java applets are loaded. JITspeed saves the machine code in native form so that each section of a Java program only needs to be translated once. Symantec has released a version for Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT along with a version for Macintosh PowerPC.
