Norton Utilities for Macintosh Now PowerPC Native, HFS+ Compatible
- Version 4.0 features improved interface and enhanced utilities, including faster Disk Doctor -
Cupertino, Calif --September 14, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC),
the world leader in utility software for business and personal computing, today
announced Norton Utilities for Macintosh 4.0, the latest
release of its award-winning problem-solving software for Mac users.
All primary utilities in Version 4.0 are PowerPC native and compatible with
Apple's new Mac OS Extended Format, HFS+, resulting in significant improvements
in overall product performance. Norton Utilities for Macintosh 4.0 will also
operate under System 8.5. In addition, Norton Utilities for Macintosh 4.0
features a more intuitive interface designed in response to user feedback.
"With this announcement, Symantec continues to demonstrate its commitment to the
Macintosh platform," said Clent Richardson, vice president of worldwide
developer relations at Apple Computer. "Macintosh users have
trusted Norton products for years, and by supporting the new Mac OS Extended
Format and HFS+, Symantec continues to be a leader in providing data repair,
recovery, and system optimization for our customers."
"With the release of Version 4.0, Symantec is reaffirming its commitment to
bringing Macintosh users the most robust, innovative, and powerful utilities for
data repair, recovery, and system optimization," said Enrique Salem, vice
president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "Symantec is the
only software company to offer a comprehensive suite of time-tested utilities to
Mac users and will continue to enhance its products to meet the demands of this
important customer segment."
The majority of computer problems faced by the Macintosh user are related to
software. These problems are broken down into three categories: disk problems
(related to data structure or integrity), lost data (from accidental erasure of
lost volumes), and software crashes (from system or application conflicts).
Norton Utilities for Macintosh contains the tools Macintosh users need to
protect their systems and their valuable data in each category-all on a single,
bootable CD.
Norton Disk Doctor provides a one-button option for disk repair, to solve major
problems and prevent them from occurring in the future. File Saver, Unerase,
and Volume Recover work together to make data recovery easy and effective should
disaster strike. Norton CrashGuard acts as an "undo" button for crashes,
allowing users to save data, continue working, and restart safely if a crash
does occur.
Version 4.0 of Norton Utilities for Macintosh offers enhancements to each of the
utilities. A faster Disk Doctor now finds, diagnoses, and repairs all disk
problems on a single attempt, thereby increasing user productivity by greatly
reducing the time it takes to maintain a trouble-free system.
In addition, data recovery is more comprehensive with Version 4.0 with an
improved Unerase feature, which now allows users to recover folders as well as
files.
Since 1994, Norton Utilities for Macintosh has continued to garner praise from
trade publications worldwide. Most recently, Norton Utilities for Macintosh was
named Best Utility by MacFormat/Northern Europe in January 1998 and won the 1997
MacHome Journal Home Choice Award for Best System Maintenance.
Pricing and Availability
Norton Utilities for Macintosh 4.0 is currently available and is priced at
$99.95 ERP and $49.95 upgrade.
System Requirements
Norton Utilities for Macintosh 4.0 requires the Macintosh operating system 7.5x
and up, a PowerPC, 16MB RAM, and 12MB hard disk space.
