Symantec Ships Norton SystemWorks with Free Bonus Pack
- Industry's First Integrated Utilities Suite Now Available;
Offers Significant Value For The Consumer Representing A Retail Value Totaling Over $500
-
Cupertino, Calif --September 17, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:
SYMC), the world leader in utility software for business and personal
computing, today announced that Norton SystemWorks, the industry's
first integrated suite of utility and anti-virus products, is
shipping. Norton SystemWorks is comprised of Symantec's award-winning
utility and anti-virus products, including Norton Utilities, Norton
AntiVirus, Norton CrashGuard, and a six-month subscription to Norton
Web Services. In addition, each Norton SystemWorks package will
include a free Norton System Works Bonus Pack containing Norton Mobile
Essentials, Visual Page, WinFax Basic Edition, and pcANYWHERE Express.
The complete package represents a retail value totaling $500.
"Today we are breaking new ground in empowering the PC public," said
Enrique Salem, vice president, Symantec Security and Assistance
Business Unit. "Sustaining our track-record of innovative firsts in
the industry, we are offering our customers a product that features
integrated tools for enhanced productivity and protection at an
unrivaled value."
Norton SystemWorks was designed specifically to provide consumers a
comprehensive, integrated, and flexible solution to keep their
computers working. Norton SystemWorks gives users everything they need
in one box, and with one manual and one support line.
"Symantec continues to reinforce its position as a leader in utility
software by being first to market with innovative products such as
this integrated suite that offers incredible value," said Larry
Mondry, Executive Vice President of Merchandising, CompUSA.
"Our partnership with Symantec has never been stronger. Our companies
share common values around customers and we're very pleased with the
steps Symantec has taken to provide an excellent value to customers
with Norton SystemWorks," said Jerre Stead, Chairman, Ingram Micro.
"I am pleased to see Symantec take an aggressive position in the
market and believe they have positioned themselves well with the
Norton SystemWorks product," Gary Arnold, Senior Vice President of
Merchandising, Best Buy.
"Norton SystemWorks offers the functionality of four products in an
integrated solution and at a price that will appeal to consumers
looking for a great value," said Chris LeTocq, director/principal
analyst at Dataquest. "This product provides an opportunity for
consumers to one-stop-shop from the Norton brand."
Superior Integration and Value
Using a single-vendor product suite such as Norton SystemWorks rather
than offerings from multiple vendors benefits users in several ways.
Norton SystemWorks gives users a comprehensive suite of high-quality,
market-leading products that address problem solving, viruses,
crashes, and outdated applications and drivers.
Because Norton engineers not only designed each product in the suite
but also Norton SystemWorks itself, the product offers unsurpassed
integration, thereby simplifying installation and start-up. Product
integration features include a single install, single emergency disk
set, and the Norton Integrator. The Integrator provides a single
control panel for easy access to all the utilities included in Norton
SystemWorks, and the products in Norton SystemWorks work together to
detect and solve problems, eliminate viruses, and recover from system
crashes.
In addition to providing superior integration, Norton SystemWorks
delivers incredible value. The complete suite and Bonus Pack are 80
percent less expensive than purchasing competitive anti-virus and
problem-solving software individually. Norton SystemWorks is a
comprehensive set of award-winning products in best-selling utility
categories for one low price.
With the addition of the free Bonus Pack, Norton SystemWorks
represents an incomparable value which would retail over $500.
A Comprehensive Product Suite
Norton SystemWorks is the first and only comprehensive suite that
offers users everything they need to keep their systems running
safely, reliably, and at peak performance.
Norton Utilities, named MVP by PC Computing magazine, is included with
Norton SystemWorks. Norton Utilities offers users unrivaled
problem-solving power for their systems-detecting, repair, and
preventing major and minor computer problems and optimizing systems to
run at peak efficiency.
Norton SystemWorks also includes Norton AntiVirus, PC Magazine's
perennial Editor's Choice Award winner. Norton AntiVirus provides the
best detection of both in-the-wild and Word macro viruses, and detects
and removes known, unknown, and unidentified viruses. Its LiveUpdate
feature simplifies the process of downloading virus definition
updates, thereby ensuring that users' systems are virus-free and
protected from all possible sources of infection, including the
Internet, floppy disks, e-mail attachments, shared files, and
networks.
Norton SystemWorks protects users against data loss with Norton
CrashGuard, which Family PC recently designated as a recommended
product. Norton CrashGuard provides three times the crash protection
of any competing product. It minimizes the chance of a system crash by
utilizing award-winning Norton technology to find and solve disk
problems. Norton CrashGuard updates installed software to reduce
system problems and keep users' machines running smoothly.
Norton SystemWorks also includes Norton Web Services, a library of
web-based programs designed to make computing easier and more
reliable. Norton Web Services enables users to receive commercial and
freeware/shareware software updates via a simple point-and-click
interface. LiveUpdate Pro, a component of Norton Web Services, was
recently called the best-designed update service product by PC
Magazine. LiveUpdate Pro provides patches not only for Symantec
products, but offers over 3,600 updates and drivers for other vendors'
products as well.
Free Functionality Added with Norton System Works Bonus Pack
The Bonus Pack that accompanies Norton SystemWorks includes four of
Symantec's most popular products: Norton Mobile Essentials, Visual
Page, WinFax Basic Edition, and pcANYWHERE Express.
Norton Mobile Essentials solves a major need for mobile PC users by
providing tools to keep them productive when working away from the
home or office, enabling them to prepare for trips, adjust software
settings for new locations, and resolve communication problems.
Visual Page has been lauded as an easy to use web page creation
management tool that helps everyone from beginners to seasoned web
designers quickly create professional-looking web pages in an
intuitive, WYSIWG environment.
WinFax Basic Edition is Windows-based software that enables users to
send and receive faxes from their PCs - an especially important
feature considering Windows 98 has no faxing capability.
pcANYWHERE Express is an ActiveX Control, Plug-in, and Java Client
version of Symantec's popular remote control solution pcANYWHERE.
pcANYWHERE Express is a collection of communication components that
provide remote control capabilities within an Internet browser
interface. With pcANYWHERE Express, users can remotely access data and
control applications located on another PC.
