Market-Leading Norton SystemWorks Suite Fully Integrates Award-Winning Norton CleanSweep and Norton CrashGuard
Norton Ups the Ante by Delivering the Next Generation Utility Suite, now with the Market-Leading Uninstaller and Crash Protection Products
CUPERTINO, Calif --December 7, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC), the world leader in
utility suites, today announced that Norton SystemWorks, the industry's number one integrated
utility suite, now includes Norton CleanSweep 4.5, the most complete hard drive clean-up solution
available. The suite also includes the latest version of CrashGuard, the industry's most powerful
crash intervention and protection software. Norton SystemWorks includes five powerful Symantec
utilities-Norton AntiVirus 5.0, Norton Utilities 3.0, Norton CrashGuard 4.0, the Norton CleanSweep
4.5, and a six-month subscription to Norton Web Services-in one convenient package.
According to PC Data, Norton SystemWorks is already the fourth best selling Windows business
software. PC Data reports that Norton SystemWorks is also outselling McAfee Office by a three to
one margin.
"With the addition of Norton CleanSweep to Norton SystemWorks, consumers are receiving a suite of
utilities representing unprecedented quality, value and functionality," said Enrique Salem, vice
president, Symantec Security and Assistance Business Unit. "Norton CleanSweep brings comprehensive
hard drive clean-up capabilities to Norton SystemWorks and provides users with the most thorough,
safest, and efficient uninstaller available. This latest version of Norton SystemWorks confirms
Symantec's clear leadership in the utility suite category."
Norton SystemWorks Standard Edition includes a free bonus pack of the following valuable individual
products: Norton Mobile Essentials, Visual Page, WinFax Basic, Norton Secret Stuff, Norton 2000 BIOS
Test & Fix, and pcANYWHERE Express, which, together with Norton SystemWorks, represents a retail
value totaling over $500. Norton SystemWorks Professional Edition's free bonus pack includes all
products in the Standard Edition Bonus Pack as well as Norton 2000 and Norton Ghost which, together
with Norton SystemWorks, represents a retail value totaling over $600.
Norton SystemWorks was designed specifically to provide consumers a comprehensive, completely
integrated solution to keep their computers working. Much more than a bundle, Norton SystemWorks
gives users everything they need in one box-one install, one product update center, one manual, one
support line, and one emergency disk set-with a single, easy-to-use interface. Each product in the
Norton SystemWorks suite was integrated using Symantec's integration technologies, thereby
eliminating the incompatibility problems associated with bundled offerings.
Integrated Product Suite Includes Valuable Utilities
The newest addition to the Norton SystemWorks package, Norton CleanSweep 4.5 is the fastest, safest,
and most complete hard drive clean-up solution available, simplifying the removal of outdated
applications and the widest array of unneeded and unwanted files. Norton CleanSweep's Internet Sweep
cleans more Internet debris than any other uninstaller product. This innovative technology not only
cleans out folders containing cookies, plug-ins, and cache files, it also tracks files installed
over the Internet such as ActiveX controls. The Safety Sweep feature performs optional, automated
backups, while Smart Sweep automatically tracks every file installed on a system for safe,
effective, and complete application removal. In addition, Norton CleanSweep includes an innovative
one-button clean-up feature called Fast & Safe Cleanup, which removes space-eating file types with a
single click of the mouse. The low disk space scan within Norton Utilities will recommend that
customers use Norton CleanSweep to clean their hard drive if they're running low on disk space.
Norton CleanSweep has won numerous awards, including PC Magazine's Editor's Choice, and was named to
Windows Magazine's WinList.
Norton SystemWorks also includes Norton AntiVirus, PC Magazine's perennial Editor's Choice Award
winner. For the third time this year, Virus Bulletin awarded a Norton AntiVirus product its coveted
100% Award for detecting all in-the-wild viruses in VB's comprehensive test sets. Norton AntiVirus
offers detection and repair of unknown and new viruses, the ability to safely isolate viral files in
a safe location, support for incremental or "micro" definitions, and an extensible virus detection
engine that is updatable via the Internet.
Norton Utilities 3.0, included in Norton SystemWorks, was named MVP by PC Computing magazine. Norton
Utilities gives users unrivaled problem-solving power for their systems. Norton Utilities provides
automatic background detection of Windows and registry problems, disaster recovery in Windows
(including a Recovery Wizard), analysis agents to make problem-solving easy and efficient, and
notification of out-of-date rescue disks.
Part of Norton SystemWorks, Norton CrashGuard 4.0 is the industry's most powerful crash intervention
and protection software. Norton CrashGuard intercepts system crashes, application crashes, and
browser crashes while protecting against data loss and assisting users in recovering from crashes
that do occur. Norton SystemWorks also includes Norton Web Services, a library of web-based programs
designed to make computing easier and more reliable. Norton Web Services checks every patch for
viruses and installation issues before being posted, fully supports Windows 98 (with an emphasis on
Windows 98 compatibility updates), gives priority to meaningful business application updates rather
than shareware, provides twice as many international patches, and is built on an open, web-based
architecture.
