Symantec and Pacific Bell Enter Strategic Business Alliance
Partnership To Joint-Market Productivity Tools for Teleworkers
CUPERTINO, Calif --December 16, 1998-- Pacific Bell, a
subsidiary of SBC Communications Inc., and Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC), the world leader in
utility software for business and personal computing, today announced they have signed a business
alliance agreement to joint market Pacific Bell's Caller ID service and Symantec's new telecommuting
software.
Using pcTelecommute - Symantec's new telecommuting productivity solution software - and Pacific
Bell's Caller ID service, users can control unwanted interruptions by screening calls with their PC.
With pcTelecommute's call screening feature and Pacific Bell's Caller ID, all identified phone
numbers are displayed directly on the user's PC screen.* Further enabling users to limit
interruptions and increase productivity, pcTelecommute also filters calls, notifying users only of
calls from specified numbers.
Under the terms of the agreement, Pacific Bell will feature pcTelecommute in its quarterly Work at
Home Resources newsletter and will promote pcTelecommute as a complementary solution to its
telecommunications services. Symantec will promote Pacific Bell's Caller ID service by including
Pacific Bell's 800 number on the box of pcTelecommute products sold in California. Symantec has
incorporated support for Caller ID in its pcTelecommute solution so that calls can be tracked and
screened, and matched with contacts from within the application, allowing employees working from
home to more efficiently manage their time, minimize interruptions and increase productivity.
"Pacific Bell is proud to partner with Symantec," said Steve Dimmit, vice president consumer
marketing, Pacific Bell. "Our Work at Home solutions help entrepreneurs, telecommuters and anyone
who often takes work home, increase productivity. Our Caller ID service along with Symantec's
pcTelecommute will help people working from home become more efficient.
*Some restrictions and limitations may apply.
Designed by telecommuters for telecommuters, pcTelecommute provides consumers everything they need
to productively work from home in an easy-to-use application. With its integrated activity tracking
and status report generator, Caller ID and contact management capabilities, one-button faxing
feature, powerful file transfer and synchronization tools and industry leading remote control
capabilities, pcTelecommute provides telecommuters the tools to work from home with the convenience
of being at the office.
pcTelecommute users can order Caller ID service directly from Pacific Bell by simply dialing the 800
number on the product packaging (1-888-800-9101).
According to a recent IDC/LINK survey, approximately 9.1 million households across the United States
include a telecommuter (someone who works at home for an employer three or more days per month).
Calling telecommuting a "national lifestyle," the survey also shows that California has the nation's
highest percentage of telecommuter households.
"For telecommuters throughout California, this alliance makes it easier than ever to have a
full-featured productivity solution that enhances their work-at-home lifestyle," said Christopher
Calisi, vice president of Symantec's Remote Productivity Business Unit.
