Tivoli and Symantec Announce Year 2000 Solution for Small to Medium Businesses
Tivoli Manager for Norton 2000 - IT Director Edition to be Bundled with Symantec's Norton 2000
AUSTIN, Texas, --January 4, 1999-- Tivoli Systems Inc., the
world leader in IT management solutions, and Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader
in utility software for business and personal computing, today announced the bundling of the new
Tivoli Manager for Norton 2000, IT Director Edition, with Symantec's Norton 2000. The combined
products provide customers with a centralized management solution that helps proactively detect and
resolve Year 2000 compliance issues throughout their network computing environments. The new product
integrates Symantec's Norton 2000 Corporate Edition v1.01 with Tivoli IT Director, Tivoli's
breakthrough management product for organizations with hundreds of users. Out-of-the-box, Norton
2000 can be integrated with Tivoli IT Director helping businesses detect Year 2000 vulnerabilities.
"Year 2000 compliance is the number one concern for small to medium businesses today," said
Alexandre Machado, IT Manager, Banco Pactual, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. "Given limited resources and
difficult time constraints, IT administrators find themselves racing against the clock to protect
their IT assets, and ultimately their customers. Tivoli's Manager for Norton 2000 gives us the
ability to detect, analyze and continually assess Year 2000 systems, applications and user data
vulnerabilities, reducing the time and costs associated with preparing our business for the new
millennium."
"Our goal is to provide customers the most effective Year 2000 compliance tool available," said
Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "By partnering
with Tivoli, we can offer small to medium businesses comprehensive solutions that combine Norton
2000's sophisticated analytical and detection capabilities with Tivoli IT Director's centralized
management."
Year 2000 Resolution With the constant introduction of new data files, applications and desktop
systems, small to medium size organizations demand Year 2000 analysis and resolution. With limited
IT staff and budget, these companies require a solution that proactively detects and informs
customers of potential problems. Tivoli Manager for Norton 2000 integrates Symantec Norton 2000 and
Tivoli IT Director, enabling an end-to-end Year 2000 solution. The combined products resolve Year
2000 vulnerabilities using systems and network management to quickly deploy date processing fixes
and patches created by customers specifically for "problem programs."
Symantec Norton 2000 Corporate Edition scans desktop assets for anomalies in important data files,
system BIOS and real-time clocks. It also continually updates its application database with Symantec
Live UpdateÖ and provides log files from multiple systems to Tivoli IT Director. Tivoli IT Director
centralizes the Year 2000 detection process and helps automate correction. Based on a severity level
reported by Symantec Norton 2000, Tivoli IT Director generates an automated event, proactively
paging or emailing an administrator when a severity threshold is detected. Using Tivoli IT Director,
the IT support team can be confident that their environment is being continuously monitored and that
upgrades, patches and entirely new applications can be automatically applied to hundreds of affected
desktops.
Channel partners providing Year 2000 services can use Tivoli Manager for Norton 2000, IT Director
Edition, to reduce the time it takes to evaluate Year 2000 problems in businesses and provide a more
efficient way to generate and implement a solution to reduce a customer's Year 2000 problems.
"Symantec's Norton 2000 is one of the most effective and easy-to-use Year 2000 solutions on the
market," said Jan Cross, vice president Workgroup Business Solutions for Tivoli Systems Inc. "Our
joint solution with Symantec helps small to medium businesses quickly assess, upgrade and maintain
their Year 2000 compliance across hundreds of IT resources."
