Norton AntiVirus Chosen As Key Component in IBM e-Business Security Solution
CUPERTINO, Calif. - January 19, 1999 - Symantec Corporation
(Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility software for business and personal computing, today
announced that IBM has selected Norton AntiVirus as the best-of-breed anti-virus component for IBM
SecureWay(TM) First Secure -- the industry's first comprehensive e-business security solution.
IBM SecureWay FirstSecure enables companies to turn to a single vendor for all the security
software, hardware and services needed when moving their businesses to the Internet. The IBM
SecureWay FirstSecure offering will be available worldwide in April 1999.
"IBM's SecureWay First Secure offering allows customers to get a comprehensive, best-of-breed
security solution from one of the most trusted names in the industry," said Enrique Salem, vice
president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "FirstSecure represents a major
thrust by IBM into the enterprise security solution space. Including Norton AntiVirus as a
cornerstone of this solution signals an endorsement of IBM's confidence in the product as the best
technology for their customers."
This initiative is the latest endeavor between Symantec and IBM since the announcement in 1998 that
Symantec licensed IBM's immune system technology and patents and would combine that with its own
technology to produce a range of products and solutions to support IBM platforms. As part of that
agreement, IBM assigned its existing anti-virus customers and OEM contracts to Symantec, and is
encouraging its customers who currently have installed IBM anti-virus software to convert to
Symantec's Norton AntiVirus software.
The Norton AntiVirus product line is based on a multi-tier strategy that integrates a powerful
anti-virus solution at the desktop, server, groupware server, Internet e-mail gateway, and firewall
levels to provide users the most comprehensive virus detection and repair. Norton AntiVirus users
receive cutting-edge protection against unknown file, boot, and macro viruses with Symantec's
revolutionary Bloodhound heuristic technology, which analyzes programs and enables the user to
repair an infected file immediately.
Norton AntiVirus also features NAVEX, Symantec's exclusive modular engine technology. It allows the
Symantec AntiVirus Research Center to provide the most advanced, up-to-date anti-virus solutions to
all customers across all platforms. Using NAVEX, Norton AntiVirus customers have received instant
protection for Office 97 viruses, Java viruses, Trojan Horses, 32-bit viruses and more without a
single product re-installation, lowering the overall cost of ownership.
Symantec's Norton AntiVirus solution protects desktops, notebooks and workstations against all
sources of potential virus threats including -- Internet downloads, floppy disks, e-mail
attachments, shared files, compressed files, CD-ROMs and networked hard disks. At the desktop,
Norton AntiVirus provides real-time protection, as a background application, without slowing other
In addition, Norton AntiVirus provides real-time, scheduled and on-demand scanning to protect
against transmissions within servers and workgroups running Novell NetWare, Windows NT Server, Lotus
Notes and Microsoft Exchange. Administrators can rely on Norton AntiVirus as a stable, reliable and
efficient solution with reporting that is centralized and flexible with the ability to send alert
messages using a variety of alerting methods.
Norton AntiVirus allows administrators to route file downloads, uploads and Internet e-mail
messaging traffic through the firewall and SMTP server, where they may be scanned for viruses. It
imposes minimal degradation to the normal throughput level of the corporate network. In addition,
Norton AntiVirus applies intelligent protection to files and protocols that are very open to virus
attacks only, preserving performance for both the server and network from unnecessary scanning.
Most importantly, Norton AntiVirus for Firewalls and Internet E-Mail Gateways are the first line of
defense to intercept and destroy incoming viruses, in real-time, before they reach the network--and
stop outgoing viruses before they reach beyond the corporate walls and through the Internet to
clients, customers and other digital domains.
