Symantec and InstallShield Software Corporation Form Partnership to Deliver Software Registration Solutions

Online Registration Tool Licensed for Use by InstallShield, Further Expands InstallShield's Offerings to Software Developers

CUPERTINO, Calif. - March 8, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility software for business and personal computing, today announced it has signed an agreement to license its LiveReg online registration technology to InstallShield Software Corporation. Under the terms of the agreement, InstallShield, the industry leader in software installation and deployment solutions, enhances its product offerings by providing developers a proven and scaleable solution to software registration.

Symantec's LiveReg technology allows a product to transmit user registration information to a specified server address. It can be executed from within the installation process or from within the application itself. Since Symantec introduced LiveReg in September 1997, registration totals for Symantec products have more than tripled. Symantec currently averages more than 9,000 LiveReg registrations per day.

InstallShield has already started to integrate the LiveReg solution for leading software vendors through its Consulting Services group. InstallShield Consulting Services has helped seven of the top 10 software vendors create sophisticated, customized setup techniques for Windows applications. InstallShield provides tailor-made services for all phases of installation development, including design, integration, testing and transfer of knowledge

Using LiveReg for Quick, Flexible Registration
While other products allow only dialup or Internet registration, LiveReg supports connections via the Internet and direct modem-to-modem dialup. Users can also print their registration information and send it to the software vendor via postal mail or fax.

For software vendors with an existing registered user database, InstallShield will integrate the LiveReg registration engine with the vendor's installation system and prepare the database to receive registrations. For software vendors with no registered user database, InstallShield will also work with them to create one, by advising the software vendor on the selection of a customer/registration management system or service, as well as identification of suppliers and partners for design, implementation and integration.

In addition to registration solutions, InstallShield Consulting Services helps companies address web-based sale, download and distribution, unattended/silent installs, TCP/RAS/DUN, logo compliance, ODBC and BDE, and multiple applications within a single installation.
