Norton 2000 Named Best End-User Software at FOSE '99
Symantec Solution Surpasses Competition in Innovation, Usability, Specifications, and Value
Cupertino, Calif,. - March 23, 1999 - Symantec Corporation
(Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility software for
business and personal computing, today announced that Norton 2000 was named best
end-user software at FOSE '99, the largest information technology exposition for
the government. This year, FOSE showcased Y2K policy speakers, products, and
solutions and presented in-depth, timely methods for addressing Y2K issues.
Norton 2000 was the only Y2K product to receive a Best New Product Award at the
show.
"FOSE has long been acknowledged as the most important IT event for the U.S.
government-one of the largest buyers of information technology in the world,"
said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance
Business Unit. "Consequently, we are very pleased that this veteran event has
recognized Norton 2000 as a superior tool for addressing today's pressing Y2K
concerns of government agencies and offices."
FOSE is owned and operated by Post-Newsweek Business Information, Inc. (PNBI),
the technology-focused business unit of The Washington Post Company and the
leading provider of information in the government IT market. PNBI publications
include Government Computer News, government Windows NT, GCN Shopper, GCN State
& Local, Contract Souring Guide, Washington Technology, and more.
Government Computer News received 140 entries in 13 categories for the 1999
competition-up from 10 categories in previous years. Sixty-five products made
the cut as finalists in the Best New Product Awards. Fourteen GCN editors judged
entries in the categories with which they were familiar. A minimum of five
editors independently judged each category's entries. Judges scored products for
innovation, specifications, usability, and value. The highest qualifying scores
earned a spot on the finalist list, and only the best in each category were
named winners.
After meticulous evaluation, judges awarded Norton 2000 Best New
Product-End-User Software. Norton 2000 is an effective Y2K solution that
addresses century-date issues-including data, applications, and the BIOS
vulnerabilities-on desktop and laptop PCs.
Norton 2000 continues to earn praise from publications representing both the
public and private sectors. In January, Government Computer News awarded Norton
2000 its Reviewer's Choice designation for outperforming its six competitors,
and Windows Magazine named Norton 2000 to its influential WinList-the only Y2K
solution to receive the recognition.
