Symantec Guards Groupware Environments with Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino

New R5-Compatible Version Features Enhanced Integration, Performance, and Scanning; More Comprehensive Reporting

CUPERTINO, Calif. - April 5, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility software for business and personal computing, today announced the release of Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino. This version of Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes/Domino includes several new features designed to give Domino databases the most comprehensive, reliable, automatic anti-virus protection in a multi-server environment.

Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino works in real time to scan, detect, and repair viruses found in Lotus Notes/Domino environments without inhibiting or degrading server performance or stability. Enhanced to support the Lotus/Domino R5 multi-server environment, version 2.0 includes a new feature called Scan Window, which allows an administrator to schedule a scan for a particular period of time. Scan Window has the intelligence to know where to start scanning based on where the last scan ended. As a result, enterprises with many databases are able to rotate through all their servers, optimizing scan time and providing maximum server protection.

Easy, Flexible Administration
For ease of configuration, Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino provides replication-friendly databases for local and remote configuration. Virus definitions are automatically retrieved and may be centrally managed and rapidly deployed through Notes or Symantec's specially developed management software.

Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino features high-performance, flexible scanning. Incremental scanning ensures that redundant scanning is eliminated and that scan speeds are optimized. Maximum administrative control and flexibility allow the administrator to set scan configurations from remote computers, to choose real-time, on-demand, or scheduled scanning, and to have infected files repaired, quarantined, or deleted.

Version 2.0 of Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes/Domino is easy to use and configure because all operations, such as alerting, event logging, database scanning, and configuration, are done in a native Notes format. Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes is based on the Notes interface, so there is no new interface to learn, thereby reducing training and ownership costs. Integration with Notes Statistics and Event Reporting allows for administrative ease. Version 2.0 also provides a comprehensive set of reports, allowing administrators to view, print, and export valuable report information in numerous formats. Version 2.0 also includes fully customizable alerts, thereby keeping administrators informed of the virus activity within their organization (the sender and recipient of the note can also be notified).

Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino also features LiveUpdate, which looks for virus definition updates at system boot from a central location on the server and automatically downloads and installs the latest definitions onto the user's system. Version 2.0 also includes a modular engine called NAVEX that allows Symantec to ship fundamental changes and updates to the virus scanning engine technology with every virus definition update. LiveUpdate delivers this engine, but NAVEX is what keeps these changes small enough to download over the Internet. With LiveUpdate and NAVEX, users are assured that they are always protected against the latest virus threats.

Comprehensive, Automatic Protection
Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino includes Symantec's unique Bloodhound technology to detect and repair both known and unknown viruses at the collaboration server before they reach the desktop or network. Bloodhound sets up a virtual computer to evaluate files, then it scrutinizes a program's overall structure, programming logic, instructions, file data, and other attributes, using heuristic logic to assess the likelihood of viral infection. Clean files pass right through, but viral files are stopped before they can cause harm.

Polymorphic viruses often elude the standard method of virus detection. To detect these chameleon-like encrypted viruses, Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino uses Striker, which takes a sophisticated, patent-pending approach. Each time Norton AntiVirus scans the computer, it sets up a virtual PC, which becomes a "clean room" for Norton AntiVirus to safely execute potentially infected files. Once the virus has decrypted itself inside the Striker virtual PC, Norton AntiVirus is then able to identify and repair the virus, without endangering other files.

The product also includes AutoProtect, which provides continuous, unobtrusive background protection, automatically scanning notes in real time, utilizing a Notes' multithreaded server process. Norton AntiVirus scans all incoming and outgoing SMTP, POP3, IMAP, and cc:Mail traffic on the Domino Server and scans incoming and outgoing X400 Notes Mail traffic on Domino servers, including mail servers, mail hubs, and passthrough servers. Norton AntiVirus even scans and repairs embedded OLE objects as well as compressed files and MIME and UUENCODE attachments. NAV also scans documents during the replication process, assuring administrators that no viruses will be passed to other Notes servers.

Available to all Norton AntiVirus for Lotus Notes Platinum Support customers, Macro Virus Protection (MVP) virtually eliminates the macro virus threat in a corporate environment. Under the MVP system, documents containing macros are checked against an MIS-approved list of macros. If the macros do not appear on the list, access to the document is denied and is not allowed to load. The approved macro list is a data file, created and maintained by the corporate MIS department, and stored in the workstations' Norton AntiVirus directory.
