Symantec is the Leader in U.S. Retail Software Sales

Sales of Norton AntiVirus and Norton SystemWorks strengthened with 62 percent and 69 percent unit market share respectively in April

Cupertino, Calif. May 24, 1999 - Recent figures released by independent market intelligence firm, PC Data, confirms Symantec Corporation's (Nasdaq:SYMC) leadership position in the U.S. retail software market. PC Data's top-selling software list for April 1999 reported Norton AntiVirus 5.0 as the number one selling software product in the United States, edging out Microsoft's Windows 98 Upgrade package.

According to PC Data, Symantec grew U.S. retail sales in April by 66 percent in dollars and 149 percent in units compared to April 1998. Growth over a trailing three months was 24 percent in dollars and 44 percent in units. The PC Data figures show Norton AntiVirus strengthened its leadership with a 62 percent unit share of the U.S. retail anti-virus market and Norton SystemWorks continued to lead the U.S. utility suite market with 69 percent unit market share. Other Symantec products included on PC Data's top 20 business software list included Norton AntiVirus 5.0, Norton SystemWorks 2.0, Norton Utilities 4.0, Norton AntiVirus 5.0 Deluxe, pcAnywhere 32 and Winfax Pro 9.0.
