Norton AntiVirus Named 1999 Software Product Of The Year By Windows Magazine
Seven Symantec Products Top Magazine's Exclusive WinList of
Recommended Products Norton AntiVirus, Norton SystemWorks, ACT!, WinFax, Norton Ghost, Mobile Essentials, and Norton 2000
Cupertino, Calif. June 16, 1999 - Symantec Corporation
(Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility software for business and personal
computing, today announced that Norton AntiVirus 5.0 was named the 1999 Software
Product of the Year by Windows Magazine. In addition, seven Symantec products
currently top Windows Magazine's exclusive WinList of recommended products. Only
software giant Microsoft has more software solutions on the list, published in
the June issue of the magazine.
"The continued widespread recognition the trade press has given to so many
Symantec products helps strengthen our dedication to providing consumers with
best-of-breed solutions that make computing safer, easier and more productive,"
said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business
Unit.
Once a year, the technical experts and editors at Windows Magazine revisit the
thousands of products reviewed over the past year and consider each based on its
innovation, ability to meet real business needs, cost-effectiveness, ease of use
and the vendor's service and support. Then rigorous scrutiny is applied to
determine which of these products merit the top honors of hardware and software
products of the year.
As the 1999 Software Product of the Year, Norton AntiVirus 5.0 was praised by
Windows Magazine editors who said the product "remains easy to use, retains its
best features and adds a few new conveniences." Editors further stated that
"small refinements uphold its (the product's) excellent reputation; and scanning
is as fast as ever."
In addition, on a monthly basis, Windows Magazine editors test, evaluate, and
compare hundreds of hardware and software products. Only the best rise to the
WinList. Products remain on the list as long as they lead their categories.
Symantec's Norton AntiVirus, Norton SystemWorks, ACT!, WinFax, Norton Ghost,
Mobile Essentials, and Norton 2000 top this month's WinList.
Symantec's Norton AntiVirus 5.0 took its place on the WinList in November 1998;
editors praised it for "excellent virus protection; now lets you quarantine new
viruses." Windows Magazine editors stated "the best utilities and the
best integration make the best utility suite," and named Norton SystemWorks
Professional Edition 2.0 to the WinList in May 1999. ACT! 4.0 has remained on the
WinList since June 1998; editors described it as "easy to use or customize; the
best general purpose, networkable contact manager." WinFax PRO 9.0 has remained
on the WinList since January 1999; editors wrote, "most features in fax software;
easy to install and use; good price."
Norton Ghost 5.1 has retained its spot on the WinList since September 1998, when
editors called it "the best utility for copying hard drives through enterprises."
Mobile Essentials first topped the WinList in August 1998; since then, editors
have continued to refer to it as "a welcome utility for professionals preparing
to compute while on the road." Norton 2000 Corporate Edition took its place on
the WinList for the first time in February 1999; "the best Y2K hardware and
software checker combined in one network-friendly package," noted editors.
