Mobile Workers Can Now Enjoy Benefits of Symantec's
Award-Winning WinFax PRO with Release of WinFax for Palm Computing® Devices
Innovative Solution Enables Mobile Professionals to Send,
Receive, Edit, and Manage Faxes from Handheld Devices
Cupertino, Calif. June 23, 1999 - Symantec Corporation
(Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced it is shipping Mobile WinFax for Palm Computing
devices, a new product from the makers of WinFax PRO, the number one desktop
faxing solution. Mobile WinFax enables mobile professionals to send, receive,
edit, and manage faxes directly from their Palm Computing devices. Mobile WinFax
is the first faxing solution for Palm Computing devices to integrate with desktop
systems as well.
"Mobile WinFax addresses the productivity needs of mobile professionals by
providing them a high-quality tool for communicating via fax anytime, anywhere,"
said Christopher Calisi, vice president of Symantec's Remote Productivity
Business Unit.
Mobile WinFax adds robust fax capabilities to Palm Computing devices. Mobile
professionals can use a compatible clip-on modem or GMS cell phone adapter with
their Palm Computing device to send or receive faxes at any time. In addition,
Mobile WinFax includes a unique desktop component that enable users to perform a
HotSync operation with their desktop PC and fax documents from it without having
to return to the office, which also conserves limited storage space on Palm
Computing devices.
With Mobile WinFax, users can draft faxes from their Palm Computing devices and
address them to one or more recipients using addresses stored in their Palm
address books. Additionally, mobile professionals can annotate or sign outgoing
faxes using the Palm Computing device input pen. Mobile WinFax supports standard
and customized cover pages and can also generate cover pages on the fly without
consuming valuable memory on their handheld devices. It also allows mobile users
to insert a Palm memo into a cover page or attach it as a separate page in an
outgoing fax. Furthermore, users can receive their fax messages or view a list of
all faxes received on their desktop PC right from their Palm Computing devices.
To leverage the power of a desktop PC, Mobile WinFax includes a desktop fax
engine that works with HotSync technology to enable mobile professionals to use
their desktops to send or receive faxes. Users can store an entire library of
attachments on their desktop PCs and attach these to faxes created on the access
Palm Computing devices and then send the faxes using HotSync. They can also
choose to download PC attachments to their Palm device so that frequently faxed
documents can be sent directly to from their Palm Computing devices. Because the
desktop will log all faxes, users can also safely delete fax log information from
their Palm Computing devices and remain assured that they have a complete record
of all communications stored on the desktop.
Mobile Winfax uses WinFax PRO as the desktop send engine if it is installed on
the user's desktop machine. Logs are fully integrated so all items sent from the
Palm Computing device are logged in the WinFax PRO logs.
