Symantec's Norton AntiVirus Number One in U.S. Retail Sales for First Half of 1999, Says PC Data
Seven Symantec Products in PC Data Top 20 Best-Selling List More Than Any Other Vendor
Cupertino, Calif, August 9, 1999 - Figures released by independent market
intelligence firm, PC Data, show that Symantec Corporation's (Nasdaq:SYMC) Norton
AntiVirus 5.0 was the number one business software sold* in the U.S. retail
market for the first six months of 1999.
According to PC Data, the U.S. retail market grew 17 percent in units during the
first six months of 1999 compared to the first six months of 1998, while Symantec
increased unit sales by 61 percent in the same period.
In the important anti-virus category, Symantec increased unit sales by 64 percent
during the six months to be the leader with 60 percent market share.
For the period January through June, seven Symantec products featured in PC
Data's hit list of top-selling business software:
Norton AntiVirus 5.0,
Norton SystemWorks 2.0,
Norton SystemWorks 1.0,
pcAnywhere 32 Host/Remote,
WinFax Pro 9.0,
Norton Utilities 4.0 and
Norton AntiVirus 5.0 Deluxe.
On July 14, Symantec announced the first of a worldwide chain of online stores
created and managed by Internet superstore Beyond.com. Symantec's e-commerce
revenue increased 166 percent for the June quarter 99 over the June quarter 98.

Symantec's strength in PC retail software sales is reflected in the Macintosh
retail market where Symantec led with two products in the top 10, Norton
Utilities 4.0 and Norton AntiVirus 5.0.
