Symantec and HP Marketing Agreement Puts Mobile Essentials on HP CD in American Airlines Admirals Clubs
Complimentary CD Introduces Mobile Professionals to New Solution
that Allows Laptop Users to Adapt Quickly to Different Work Environments
Cupertino, Calif, August 11, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC)
announced it has launched a marketing program with Hewlett-Packard Company to
include Mobile Essentials 2.0 with a demo version of the HP CapShare 910
information appliance. The software is available on complimentary CDs placed in
most American Airlines Admirals Clubs. The CDs are available to members during
August 1999 while quantities last.
Symantec Mobile Essentials makes it easy for mobile professionals to adapt to new
locations by allowing them (or their IT/IS department) to create location
profiles consisting of all of the settings that they need to change when taking
their laptop to different work locations. The HP CapShare 910 information
appliance is a portable, hand-held device designed to help mobile professionals
capture, store, and share documents with others using their existing e-mail and
e-fax tools.

information appliance and Mobile Essentials 2.0 were created to address the
unique needs of a growing mobile workforce whose primary business tool is a
laptop PC and whose goal is to do more in less time.

About Mobile Essentials 2.0
Using Mobile Essentials 2.0 significantly reduces the time users spend adjusting
their laptop settings every time they arrive in a new location and resolving
problems caused by incorrect settings. These settings, including TCP/IP settings,
network settings, dialing, default printer, and much more, can be very
intimidating to the average end user. By enabling IS/IT departments to create and
quickly deploy location profiles to their mobile workforce via e-mail, the Web,
or the corporate network, Mobile Essentials 2.0 results in increased productivity
across the organization.
Once the location profiles are installed, the laptop user simply starts Windows
and selects a location profile. All of the settings change automatically and
instantly, resulting in a dramatic decrease in downtime and a significant
increase in productivity. When a location profile requires updating, IS/IT
deploys the update via e-mail. The update installs automatically, without user
intervention, thereby further preventing the possibility of downtime and lost
productivity. In addition, if allowed by the IS/IT department, laptop users can
add or modify locations when necessary.

About the size of a portable CD player, the HP CapShare 910 information appliance
enables mobile professionals to electronically capture letters, contracts,
reports, handwritten notes, maps, presentations, receipts, newspaper articles,
magazines, and business cards. Users can capture a page in six seconds and store
up to 50 letter-size documents in black and white. In addition, these documents
can be sent directly to a IR-enabled printer for an immediate hard copy, or to a
notebook PC, desktop PC, HP handheld PC running Windows CE 2.0, or a smart
wireless hand-held device where they can be shared from anywhere with anyone.
