Getronicswang, Peoplesoft And Siemens Westinghouse Turn To Symantec To Keep Networks Safe
Symantec Continues to Strengthen Corporate Business as Companies Purchase
Licenses for 23,000 Seats of Norton AntiVirus and 5,000 Seats of Norton 2000
CUPERTINO, Calif. August 24, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC)
announced today that GetronicsWang and PeopleSoft purchased site licenses
combining 23,000 seats of Norton AntiVirus to improve cost of ownership and
protect their networks. In addition, Siemens Westinghouse, one of the most
respected names in electrical engineering, has purchased a license for 5,000
seats of Norton 2000.
In reviewing their anti-virus strategies, an important consideration for both
companies was the need to protect their networks from malicious viruses as they
are discovered without incurring the cost of installing and reinstalling new
anti-virus software.
All Norton AntiVirus detection engines come from a single code base so that
modifications or updates to the engine in response to new virus strains can be
applied by customers across multiple platforms in a single, cost efficient
deployment as part of the LiveUpdate process to install new virus definitions.
GetronicsWang, the leading provider of information technology services to
businesses and governments worldwide, purchased a license for 16,000 seats of
Norton AntiVirus. Wang Government Services, Inc. installed approximately 2,500
of these licenses.
"We transitioned to Norton AntiVirus before the Melissa virus struck," says Bill
Luther, director of information systems, Wang Government Services. "We
downloaded the virus definition from Symantec and applied it across our network
very quickly. As a result, the impact of Melissa on our systems was minimal."
PeopleSoft, a leading global supplier of enterprise application software for
business and government, is also converting to Norton AntiVirus and purchased a
site license for 7,000 seats.
The company, which provides eBusiness and analytic applications for human
resource management, financials, distribution, manufacturing, and supply chain,
along with a range of industry-specific solutions, expects to complete its
migration to the Symantec product in July. "Norton AntiVirus offers all the
solutions we need in one package," said Mike Miller, PeopleSoft's information
security officer.
As part of its strategy to ensure system compliancy to cope with the millennium
date change, Siemens Westinghouse purchased Norton 2000 for its comprehensive
Year 2000 solution for desktop PCs and distributed computing environments. "The
Norton 2000 product is one of several tools that has successfully helped us meet
our Y2K compliancy goals," says a Year 2000 project manager at Siemens
Westinghouse.
